Positive news for family businesses and farming clients on IHT!

The Government’s recent adjustment to the proposed inheritance tax reforms for agricultural and business property will come as a welcome moment of clarity for many family businesses and farming clients.

Increasing the level of assets eligible for full relief to £2.5 million per person (and making this transferable between spouses) represents a more balanced approach. It recognises the importance of succession planning and business continuity, while still modernising a system that has not always kept pace with rising asset values.

Importantly, where tax does arise, the reduced effective rate and the option to pay over 10 years interest-free should significantly reduce cashflow pressure and the risk of forced asset sales. In practice, outcomes will remain highly fact-specific, depending on the mix of qualifying and non-qualifying assets and the interaction with other allowances.

For many families, the key takeaway is not alarm but preparation. These changes reinforce the value of early, thoughtful planning/insurance and regular review, rather than reactive decisions driven by headlines. With the right advice, most businesses will continue to transition successfully to the next generation.
