Good luck to you if you’re about to get your GCSE results tomorrow! 🎉
We hope you get the grades you were aiming for and feel excited about your next steps.

Maths often gets the spotlight as a key subject and if you’re heading into a career that relies heavily on it (like accountancy), it’s definitely important.
But here’s the thing… a lower grade doesn’t mean you’re done with numbers for life. Even if accountancy isn’t on your radar, it’s never too early to learn how to manage your money wisely.

Who knows? You could be a future business owner or entrepreneur and strong financial decision-making is a skill worth having. Schools don’t always go deep into personal finance, but there’s no shortage of great books to help you take control of your money (and your future).

A couple of our favourites:
📚 How To Money by Jean Chatzky
📚 Rich Dad Poor Dad for Teens by Robert T. Kiyosaki

Whether you love it or loathe it, maths is part of everyday life — so the more comfortable you get with it now, the more confident you’ll feel later.

We’re curious to know what you like best about being a business owner or a freelancer.

Yes, we know it can be full on and tough at times and that’s what we aim to help business owners with but we’re interested to know what benefits you by being your own boss.

As well as getting up straight before you head off for a quick break, keeping on top of your invoicing can improve your cash flow.

Outstanding invoices can quickly add up leaving you waiting on money that’s already been earned. Regularly reviewing your invoices - sent and paid - can help you spot overdue payments and keep your cash flow healthy.

So try to get in the habit of checking your invoicing status or set up a system that keeps you ahead.

And enjoy that break….!

So, what’s it going to be?
⚽ Watching from home?
🍻 Heading to the pub?
😴 Going to bed and catching the highlights?
☕ Already planning an extra-strong coffee for Monday morning?
Let us know in the comments!

And as for how you’ll handle work the next day….well!

Running a business means juggling a hundred different priorities, so it’s easy for the financial basics to slip down the list.
Taking a little time each month to review your numbers can help you avoid surprises, improve cash flow and make better decisions for the months ahead.

A simple monthly finance check could include:
✔ Reconciling your accounts
✔ Setting money aside for tax
✔ Reviewing your profit and loss
✔ Checking your cash flow position

Not sure what your figures are telling you? A good accountant should do more than prepare year-end accounts – they should help you understand the story behind the numbers.

How good are you at keeping on top of the numbers?

This weekend sees the return of the Old Leigh Shanty festival run by the Leigh on Sea Lions Club - CIO ⚓️🎶

Events like this are a huge boost for local independent businesses - from pubs and cafés to shops, stalls and hospitality venues - bringing visitors into the area and helping keep our local economy thriving.

If you’re heading along, support local where you can and enjoy everything Old Leigh has to offer. The free community event runs from Sat 16th to Sun 17th May from 2pm-6pm & features over 20 shanty crews, local folk bands, and pirates performing at waterfront venues like Strand Wharf, The Crooked Billet, and The Peterboat.

And if you’re a local business gearing up for a busy summer season, now’s a good time to make sure your bookkeeping, expenses and cash flow are all shipshape too…

Have a great weekend everyone!

Could you be overpaying tax on your rental income? A lot of landlords miss out on expenses they’re entitled to claim.

Make sure you’re claiming all allowable expenses, including:

✔️repairs and maintenance - fixing leaks, repainting, servicing the boiler (but not upgrading it)
✔️replacement of domestic items - sofas, beds, carpets, fridge, washing machine - replacement only.
✔️utilities you pay for - gas electricity, water, internet, service charges, ground rent.
✔️insurance - landlord, building, contents
✔️professional fees - letting agents, accountants, and legal fees for tenancy agreements
✔️travel costs - trips to the property for inspections, repairs or agent meetings
✔️advertising - listing costs, photos, marketing to find tenants
✔️admin costs - phone postage, stationery, small office costs

The key thing to remember is it’s about maintenance and running costs - not improvements. Big upgrades, buying the property, initial furnishings or personal expenses won’t count.

If you’re not sure where the line is, it’s worth checking with your accountant or with us. Getting it right can make a real difference.

With the latest images coming back from the Artemis mission it’s a reminder that sometimes it helps to pause and look up.

When you do, it’s a quiet reminder that there is something much bigger than all of us. The day-to-day pressures of running a business - cashflow, tax deadlines, overwhelming admin - can feel all-consuming, but they are only one small part of a much wider picture.

That perspective doesn’t make those responsibilities disappear, but it can help us breathe a little, step back, and approach them with a clearer head.

Peace of mind matters.

It’s not always easy to find, especially when you’re managing everything yourself but that’s where the right support can make a real difference.

If we can take even a small part of that weight off your shoulders, and help things feel clearer and more manageable, then we’re doing what we set out to do.
