This weeks podcast is about closure, whether its your business, dropping a major project or product , it's emotional.

Passion, enthusiasm, excitement, take your pick. Often a key element when you set up and start your business, private or not for profit, it doesn't pay the bills or build capacity, it has its place

However, changing business landscapes, the brutality and harshness of competition, changing customer preferences and behaviours, the bank balance that brings you to tears (not of joy!) will mean closure and change close the lights as you leave the building.

Cash and profits , the two top level numbers all businesses, private, not for profit and charities need to keep any eye on and make.

Cash is number 1, profits (surpluses, if your feel queasy over the word profits) is number 2.

Without number 1 , you can't make number 2, Scatological association and reference unintended.

If you are not bothered about number 1 , then train for a new career , close the lights as you leave the building. Think about your staff, suppliers, customers, you and your family, that's where the pain will hit.

Ever got a tax penalty and thought, fudge, what’s that all about, that’s out of order?

When it comes to issuing penalties, HMRC are on tax crack, in the year to Mar 25 this totted up to an eye watering £2.5 billion – equivalent to a 22-mile-high stack of £20 notes!

Getting a penalty doesn’t automatically mean you have to pay it, you may have a reasonable excuse.

Stop The Software Tax: Why HMRC Must Provide Free MTD Software https://www.ihatenumbers.co.uk/stop-the-software-tax/

The way you file your taxes is changing. And if we don’t act now, it is going to cost you money.

For years, the deal has been simple for many. You earn money, owe tax, log onto the government website, file your return for free, and pay what you owe.

But from April 2026, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is breaking that deal.

They are turning off the free online tax return portal for millions of self-employed people and landlords. They are replacing it with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD ITSA).

At I Hate Numbers, we are fans of digital accounting. We know that for many businesses, moving to the cloud saves time and boosts profits. But we draw the line at the government mandating a digital system without providing the basic tools to use it.

We launched the Stop The Software Tax campaign. Our message is simple: If the government mandates it, they must provide it.

The November 2025 budget announced a dividend tax rate increase for the 26-27 tax year - 6-Apr-26 onwards .

If you get dividends - either from your own company or investments, then you will be subject to a higher rate of income tax on those dividends.
