Where is the strangest place you've spent your birthday?

For me, think it might have been this time last year when I spent my special day on an all inclusive holiday at Leeds' finest 5* resort - Leeds General Infirmary (aka the hospital!)

We even got a free upgrade to a private room - a very special treat especially when you are on the post natal ward (for the second time in 3 weeks!)

Unfortunately no matter how much you plan ahead, life will always through you curve balls, but thats why having a cashflow forecast (both in business and personally!) is so so important.

Because when life throws you a bunch of rotten lemons, if you've already got a forecast in place, you can normally preempt the rotten lemons coming your way and take action, and worst case, you can quickly adjust your plan of action to help get you back on track with minimal damage.

My last birthday could have been spent in a much nicer location, but it was still the best birthday ever - although look at all that sass our little girl had even at 4 weeks old! 🥰

Move over hot water bottles and electric blankets… why on earth are these not publicly available?!

A year ago today, I discovered the greatest invention known to mankind:
THE MAGIC HOSPITAL DUVET
An inflatable cocoon that blows warm air around you - Genius! I need one at home!

But the reason I ended up needing one is a little less amusing…

A year ago today, I found myself back on the delivery suite.. ..despite having had our baby nearly THREE WEEKS earlier.
(and back in the high dependency bay 🙈)

After an emergency C-section, it turned out that a pretty sizeable chunk of placenta had accidentally been left behind.

For the first few weeks, I’d put my symptoms down to exhaustion - I’d just spent 16 days in hospital, had a newborn baby, and was going through a lot personally.

So when I kept feeling awful, it was easy to blame exhaustion & stress!

Except the midwives' questions about whether I'd passed blood clots bigger than a 50p kept ringing in my ears.

After 10 days of back-and-forth to hospital, they finally did a scan.

Despite several medical professionals being convinced it was simply stress..

There it was: A BIG chunk of retained placenta 🤮

I arrived Friday expecting to be told everything was fine.

I even messaged Natalie asking what she wanted for lunch as I was heading to meet her and our baby afterwards.

Instead, a doctor told me: “We're taking you to the delivery suite”

"You've got the wrong patient, I had my baby three weeks ago!"

Nope, I was the patient!

After several less-invasive attempts, I had urgent surgery to remove the retained products.

And as I recovered from the procedure, I couldn't keep my body temperature up.

Which is when they brought out…

THE MAGIC DUVET.

Warm air.
Inflatable cocoon.
Instantly less frozen.

10/10 invention.

And while I certainly wouldn't recommend my method of discovering it…

It did get me thinking about something completely different:

𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠.

We use forecasts to prepare for what 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 happen.

Weather forecasts tell us whether to pack an umbrella.
Cashflow forecasts help businesses spot cashflow issues.

Because the biggest problems aren't always the ones that suddenly appear.

They're often the ones where the warning signs were there all along.

A forecast isn't about predicting the future perfectly.

It's about spotting what's coming early enough to do something about it - Preferably before they need their own financial equivalent of a magical hospital duvet! 😂

☀️ Do you check the weather forecast before planning a day out?

I do.

Which is why our original plan for a long hike in the Peak District went straight out the window when we saw just how HOT it was going to be 🥵

Instead, we decided to head to Whitby for the day.

What we didn't realise when we made that decision was that it was also the day of the solar eclipse 🌑 (We aren't hiding under a rock, we just have a 'toddler' keeping us oblivious to anything that isn't a sheep or a cow!)

So we had a lovely day by the sea, and even got to enjoy the start of the eclipse from the rather spectacular backdrop of Whitby Abbey (made famous by Dracula! 🧛‍♀️)

It got me thinking…

We use forecasts several times a month to make decisions about our day, so why are so many business owners making BIG decisions without looking at their cashflow forecast?

A weather forecast doesn't tell you exactly what 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 happen.

It gives you the information you need to make a 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 decision.

🌧️ Rain coming? Don't forget a coat or umbrella.

☀️ 34°C? Perhaps choose the seaside.

💷 Cashflow looking tight in 6 weeks? Don't commit to that big expenditure just yet.

📈 Cash building nicely? Perhaps now is the right time to invest.

And just like the weather, your cashflow forecast isn't something you create once and then forget about.

𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭.

Because circumstances change.
Plans change.
Sales change.
Costs change.

And the further ahead you can see, the more options you have.

So, before you make your next big business decision, ask yourself:

“Have I checked the forecast?” 👀

Because sometimes the smartest business decision isn't changing your plans…

…it’s simply knowing what weather you're heading into. ☀️🌧️💷

No, it's not my birthday (that is next week!)

It's International Left-Handers Day! 👈

Yes… I’m one of those people 😂

The ones who:

📝 Hold the pen at an angle that looks completely unnatural to everyone else
💪Elbow anyone they sit next to
📖Naturally want to open books, catalogues, diaries etc back to front
✂️ Have a mortal enemy - The Scissors!!

Jokes aside, being a lefty has some huge benefits like our adaptability (we have spent years adapting to a world seemingly designed for right-handers after all!)

I feel like being a lefty has also prepared me quite well for business, because sometimes you have to look at the way everyone else is doing something and think:
“Yeah… I’m going to do that differently.”
And honestly? I think that’s a pretty useful skill to have 😉
