Money management in relationship is worth fighting for, but not fighting over...

There’s a reason that money issues are top of the table when it comes to reasons for relationships ending.

IT’S TOUGH!

Here’s one example:

The shift from ‘my’ priorities to ‘our’ priorities.

In order to build something together it takes a team effort. That means there needs to be an understanding of what you both individually value, working together of how that might be accommodated, and then an agreement of what the priority is.

Plenty of room in there for miscommunication and frustration that’s for sure!! Learning to view someone else’s priority as your own is really difficult.

It’s a necessary struggle though - I truly believe couples need to be on the same page with money and how they are using it together.

Money is NOT about the numbers…

It’s about dreams, failures and aspirations.

It’s about building something.

It’s about overcoming anxiety, fear and avoidance.

It’s about learning to work with the things that resonate at the deepest level in our hearts and utilising money to be a tool to work towards THAT.

(after that, it’s a little bit about numbers 😂)

Last week I had one of the most heart filling weeks. It was like pushing a massive reset button. My incredible wife had organised a trip to my favourite place, Switzerland, for my 30th birthday 😍 just mountains, fresh air, friends, cheese and pastries.

A time to just be.

Not to get all existential crisis on you, but it’s been a tough few months in the ol’ noggin.

Some takeaways from this trip:

* cold plunges feel amazing 🥶
* my wife is the most treasured thing in my life
* I hate wine, except when it’s combined with melted cheese and bread…

Here’s to life on the 3rd floor ⬆️ 🙃 🛗

I had some rather nice news today…

I’ve passed the first exam towards Chartered Financial Planner status! I’ve got a few exams left but your boy is on track💪🏻

Only about 15% of UK financial advisers hold this certification and it take some dedication to get there, but I’ve set it in my sights.

I was fully prepared to share a ‘better luck next time’ post as I found this latest exam super tricky but I’m pleased to say it’s in the bag 🤩

Onwards and upwards, I’ll keep you posted 🚀

WELCOME TO THE 2022/23 TAX YEAR!..

…is the best line to use if you want to bore your friends to tears 😂😂

Yes, the new tax year brings fresh allowances to be used and new rules and limits that can be applied to your money life. As an independent financial adviser it’s my job to stay on top of this stuff.

However, I’d MUCH rather use them as tools to help you align your money with what matters most and help you build a financial world that you’re proud of and supports who you truly are.

I work with people on a 1 to 1 basis to help them get their money stuff together. It’s a mix of financial planning, coaching, and (if needed), product advice.

What does money mean to you? Safety? Freedom? Opportunity? The meaning you attach to money is as unique as your fingerprint. It comes from your past, the stories you believe and can get right to the core of who you are. 👀

Money management isn’t about finding the best interest rate, or doing what you think you ‘should’ do. It’s about finding out what’s truly meaningful, and directing your resources towards that end.

Where are you spending these three? They are your biggest resources: money, time and attention.

Where each of these are used dictates the life you live, the person you become, the priorities you hold, the values you have, and will powerfully impact your future trajectory.

I’m usually more concerned about money, but I’m challenged more than ever to wisely look after my time and attention as well.

Where are you spending these resources, and what does that say about the person you are… and the person you’re becoming?

How is your focus?..

This picture is me midway through the ‘Murph’ workout this year at (give it a Google if you’re confused). Long story short it’s a lot of work and it just needs to be done one rep at a time.

Steady, consistent work with focus and intent.

This week I want to reflect that approach in my life. Single tasking, not multi-tasking. Giving my single focus to the task at hand, to the client in front of me or to my wife beside me.

It’s harder than it sounds 😅

let’s not miss the moment or half-ass the job because we’re trying to do it all, deal?

Asking this strikes to the heart of what means most to you and helps reveal your priorities and what you truly value.

Fun fact: I was asked this question at an assessment day interview back in 2017 when I started my financial advice career 😬
