One woman. One massive charity challenge.

The team at UHY Peninsula are right behind our very own Tammy Brown as she prepares to take part in The Alzheimer's Society Trek26 Peak District Challenge.

This 26-mile trek through some of the Peak District’s most rugged and dramatic terrain takes place on Saturday 27 June.

Not only is Tammy taking part in this amazing fundraising event, but she is also doing it on her own, without friends or family to accompany her, making it an even harder challenge.

Tammy has previously taken part in several Cancer Research UK Race for Life events, but she admits, “This is the first proper big one I've done!”

We know that she’ll smash it, raise lots of money for this great cause, and no doubt have a great time during the Trek.

If you would like to support Tammy and the amazing work the Alzheimer’s Society is doing, please visit her Just Giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Trek26PeakDistrict202626miles-TammyBrown?fbclid=IwY2xjawRwHclleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZAwzNTA2ODU1MzE3MjgAAR4ydCc2TzyiBp_y6gbtIxa3Ng2kpij8cqxuN_bt8br0u5b6LPe44RCVhTTazw_aem_l8cEFTGpGAvCIDFWkl5gcQ

We’ll let you know how she gets on!

We have great news from our Launceston office - Callum Hill has recently been promoted to Manager 🙂

Callum joined the firm in 2021 after deciding that A Levels were not the right path for him. He had intended to get in touch with us to try to secure some work experience. However, just before he made that call, he saw that we were recruiting for an accounting apprentice, and the rest, as they say, is history!

Since joining us, Callum has completed his Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) apprenticeships at Levels 2, 3 and 4 and is now studying towards his Chartered Accountant’s ACA qualification. He is aiming to complete his ACA qualification by the summer of 2028. The training for all these apprenticeships has been provided by Accountancy Learning.

Over the past four years, Callum’s role has developed enormously. He started off by doing lots of manual data entry for bookkeeping and VAT work, before progressing to preparing client accounts and financial statements. Through his training and hands-on experience, he is now reviewing financial records and spending more time meeting with clients to build strong working relationships.

Despite not having an agricultural background, Callum has spent the past few years working closely with our farming clients and helping them run their businesses as profitably and tax-efficiently as possible.

Callum’s story is a great example of how there is more than one route into accountancy and how practical experience can build a successful career, regardless of your background or school qualifications.

Well done on your recent promotion, Callum. We’re all delighted at what you have achieved so far.

Congratulations to Jemma Fowler, who's been an intrinsic part of our team for over 25 years!

When she started, back in 2001, Jemma was Vince’s secretary, working from the then Bideford office. Over the next few years, the practice expanded, moving into Launceston and Okehampton. Her role shifted to office administration, and Jemma played a major role in handling the administrative tasks associated with each office opening.

While Jemma’s role has changed over the years, here are other changes she has also experienced:

🟢 The fax machine was a key fixture of the office (kids, ask your parents if you don’t know what this was!).
🟢 Tax returns were POSTED to the tax office, not filed online.
🟢 When the 31 January Self Assessment deadline had arrived, the remaining tax returns were HANDED IN to your local tax office (back when you used to have tax offices in towns and cities!)
🟢 Email was only just starting to be used in businesses.
🟢 The practice’s website was a couple of pages of basic information and old-school clip art images.

How times have changed!

Today, Jemma works closely with Fiona Davey, our Managing Partner, to provide office admin support, but also handles all our supplier accounts.

Well done, Jemma, for reaching this impressive milestone, and thank you for all your hard work over the years.

With the first phase of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax now live, we're receiving many enquiries about what it involves and how it affects individual taxpayers.

If you're self-employed and/or receive income from property and your annual gross earnings are £50,000 or above, you must now comply with MTD and make your first quarterly income and expenses submission before 7 August.

If your gross annual income is £30,000 or more, you will need to comply from April 2027, and those earning £20,000 or more will have to join the scheme from April 2028.

In our latest blog, Facts and Myths about MTD for Income Tax, we answer many of your queries. Read the blog here: https://www.uhy-uk.com/insights/facts-and-myths-about-making-tax-digital-income-tax-mtd-it
