Carolyn Wright, our Launceston-based bookkeeper, and her husband, Chris, recently took part in the very first Heli Hike for the Cornwall Air Ambulance.

They, along with 250 other people, walked along the Cornish Coast around Bude. The sunny day showcased the stunning coastline around Bude and also provided a perfect backdrop for the hikers to share their stories of being rescued by the air ambulance over the years.

In total, more than £23,000 was raised on the day of the Heli Hike.

If you would like to make a donation to the Cornwall Air Ambulance, please go to their website: https://cornwallairambulancetrust.org/donate/

UHY Peninsula is immensely proud of all our team members who get involved with local and national charities. Thank you 😊

Let's bust some myths in terms of Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax!

1) MTD MEANS PAYING TAX MORE OFTEN
Wrong! - You’ll still pay tax in January and July, but you’ll now send HMRC more frequent income and expense updates.

2) YOU MUST USE EXPENSIVE MTD COMPATIBLE SOFTWARE
Wrong! There are various software options, including free or low-cost solutions, that are MTD compliant.

3) MTD IS ONLY FOR VAT
Wrong! While MTD began with VAT, it is being extended to Income Tax and will include more taxpayers in the coming years.

4) SPREADSHEETS ARE BANNED
Wrong! You can continue to use spreadsheets, provided they are linked to MTD compatible software for submissions.

5) ALL TAXPAYERS ARE AFFECTED IMMEDIATELY
Wrong! MTD for Income Tax is being rolled out in stages, so not everyone will be impacted right away.

Is your cash flow under control?

Here are some practical tips for managing your cash flow more effectively.

Cash flow is one of the biggest factors in keeping a business running smoothly. You can be profitable on paper, but if cash isn’t available when you need it, problems quickly follow.

Here are a few practical ways to stay in control of your cash flow:

🟢 Keep your financial records accurate and up to date
🟢 Review your cash flow regularly so there are no surprises
🟢 Stay on top of invoicing and credit control
🟢 Plan ahead for VAT and Corporation Tax payments
🟢 Keep a close eye on overheads and unnecessary costs

Small changes can make a big difference. Sending invoices promptly, chasing overdue payments consistently, and reviewing costs regularly can all help improve cash flow and reduce pressure on the business.

Good management information is also key. When you regularly review your numbers, you can make quicker, better decisions and spot potential issues before they become bigger problems.

At UHY Peninsula, we help businesses gain clearer financial visibility through management accounts, bookkeeping, payroll and VAT support, helping you improve profitability and make confident decisions.

If you’d like support getting better control of your cash flow, please get in touch on 01566 777189 or email [email protected]

One woman. One massive charity challenge.

The team at UHY Peninsula are right behind our very own Tammy Brown as she prepares to take part in The Alzheimer's Society Trek26 Peak District Challenge.

This 26-mile trek through some of the Peak District’s most rugged and dramatic terrain takes place on Saturday 27 June.

Not only is Tammy taking part in this amazing fundraising event, but she is also doing it on her own, without friends or family to accompany her, making it an even harder challenge.

Tammy has previously taken part in several Cancer Research UK Race for Life events, but she admits, “This is the first proper big one I've done!”

We know that she’ll smash it, raise lots of money for this great cause, and no doubt have a great time during the Trek.

If you would like to support Tammy and the amazing work the Alzheimer’s Society is doing, please visit her Just Giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Trek26PeakDistrict202626miles-TammyBrown?fbclid=IwY2xjawRwHclleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZAwzNTA2ODU1MzE3MjgAAR4ydCc2TzyiBp_y6gbtIxa3Ng2kpij8cqxuN_bt8br0u5b6LPe44RCVhTTazw_aem_l8cEFTGpGAvCIDFWkl5gcQ

We’ll let you know how she gets on!

We have great news from our Launceston office - Callum Hill has recently been promoted to Manager 🙂

Callum joined the firm in 2021 after deciding that A Levels were not the right path for him. He had intended to get in touch with us to try to secure some work experience. However, just before he made that call, he saw that we were recruiting for an accounting apprentice, and the rest, as they say, is history!

Since joining us, Callum has completed his Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) apprenticeships at Levels 2, 3 and 4 and is now studying towards his Chartered Accountant’s ACA qualification. He is aiming to complete his ACA qualification by the summer of 2028. The training for all these apprenticeships has been provided by Accountancy Learning.

Over the past four years, Callum’s role has developed enormously. He started off by doing lots of manual data entry for bookkeeping and VAT work, before progressing to preparing client accounts and financial statements. Through his training and hands-on experience, he is now reviewing financial records and spending more time meeting with clients to build strong working relationships.

Despite not having an agricultural background, Callum has spent the past few years working closely with our farming clients and helping them run their businesses as profitably and tax-efficiently as possible.

Callum’s story is a great example of how there is more than one route into accountancy and how practical experience can build a successful career, regardless of your background or school qualifications.

Well done on your recent promotion, Callum. We’re all delighted at what you have achieved so far.

Congratulations to Jemma Fowler, who's been an intrinsic part of our team for over 25 years!

When she started, back in 2001, Jemma was Vince’s secretary, working from the then Bideford office. Over the next few years, the practice expanded, moving into Launceston and Okehampton. Her role shifted to office administration, and Jemma played a major role in handling the administrative tasks associated with each office opening.

While Jemma’s role has changed over the years, here are other changes she has also experienced:

🟢 The fax machine was a key fixture of the office (kids, ask your parents if you don’t know what this was!).
🟢 Tax returns were POSTED to the tax office, not filed online.
🟢 When the 31 January Self Assessment deadline had arrived, the remaining tax returns were HANDED IN to your local tax office (back when you used to have tax offices in towns and cities!)
🟢 Email was only just starting to be used in businesses.
🟢 The practice’s website was a couple of pages of basic information and old-school clip art images.

How times have changed!

Today, Jemma works closely with Fiona Davey, our Managing Partner, to provide office admin support, but also handles all our supplier accounts.

Well done, Jemma, for reaching this impressive milestone, and thank you for all your hard work over the years.
