🦖 National Dinosaur Day 🦕

Thankfully, accountancy has moved on a bit since the dinosaurs roamed the Earth...

No more keeping receipts in a shoebox fossilised at the back of a cupboard.

No more digging through a Jurassic-sized pile of paperwork at tax return time.

And definitely no need for your accountant to be extinct whenever you need advice.

At Killicks Accountants, we help sole traders, landlords and business owners keep their finances organised, tax-efficient and stress-free — using modern systems rather than Stone Age methods.

If your current accountant feels a little prehistoric, or you're looking for support from a friendly local team, we'd be happy to help.

🦕 No dinosaurs.
📊 No jargon.
✅ Just straightforward accounting and tax advice.

Feel free to send us a message to see how we can help.

Day 5 of National Learning at Work Week — VAT Registered Businesses

One of the biggest lessons we share with business owners is this:

Turnover does NOT equal profit.

It’s surprisingly common for businesses to get caught out because VAT gets treated as available cash instead of money owed later on.

A few simple habits can make a huge difference:
✔ Setting VAT aside regularly
✔ Keeping bookkeeping up to date
✔ Reviewing figures monthly
✔ Using cloud accounting software properly

With Making Tax Digital continuing to evolve, having good systems in place is becoming more important every year — not just for compliance, but for reducing stress and helping business owners understand their numbers properly.

Sometimes small improvements in bookkeeping and VAT management can completely change how confidently a business is run.

We’ve really enjoyed sharing practical business and tax tips throughout National Learning at Work Week and hope they’ve been useful.

Follow Killicks Accountants for more straightforward, educational business tips and updates throughout the year.

📌 Day 4 — Capital Gains Tax
Part of National Learning at Work Week

One of the biggest misconceptions we see around Capital Gains Tax is:

“If I sell something, I’ll just declare it on my tax return later.”

In some cases, that’s not how it works.

Certain disposals can trigger reporting deadlines much sooner than people expect — and missing them can sometimes lead to penalties or unnecessary stress later on.

Some common situations where people get caught out include:

✔ Selling a second property or buy-to-let
✔ Giving assets away to family members
✔ Selling shares or investments
✔ Crypto disposals and exchanges
✔ Selling inherited assets years later

A few things many people don’t realise:

⚠️ “Gifting” something can still create a tax liability, even if no money changes hands
⚠️ Swapping one crypto asset for another can count as a disposal
⚠️ Not every cost is allowable — but many legitimate ones are often missed
⚠️ Timing can make a difference when it comes to tax planning

The important part is usually understanding the position BEFORE the sale happens, not afterwards.

That’s exactly why National Learning at Work Week matters — learning small things now that can help avoid expensive mistakes later.

Hopefully this helps someone avoid a future headache.

National Learning at Work Week seemed like a good opportunity to highlight something that catches a lot of people out when it comes to personal tax.

A common misconception we hear is:

“I only need to complete a tax return if I’m self-employed.”

In reality, HMRC may require a tax return for a number of different reasons — even if you’re employed through PAYE.

Some common examples include:
✔ Receiving property rental income
✔ Earning side income or freelance income
✔ Selling assets and making capital gains
✔ Child Benefit tax charges
✔ Higher income adjustments
✔ Untaxed income from investments or overseas sources

One of the most useful things individuals and business owners can learn is *when* a tax return is actually required.

Many people don’t realise they should be registered until HMRC contacts them later on — which can sometimes lead to avoidable penalties and interest.

Understanding your tax position early can save a lot of stress later down the line and helps avoid surprises from HMRC.

If you’re ever unsure whether you need to complete a return, it’s always worth checking sooner rather than later.

🏠 Landlord Tip for National Learning at Work Week

One thing many landlords don’t realise until it’s too late:
Not every expense on a rental property is treated the same for tax purposes.

A few common areas that regularly cause confusion:

✔ Repairs are usually allowable
❌ Improvements and upgrades often aren’t

Example:
Replacing a broken boiler is normally treated differently to installing a brand new upgraded heating system.

✔ Mortgage interest relief rules changed several years ago
Many landlords are still surprised by how this affects their tax bill.

✔ Good record keeping matters more than ever
Keeping invoices, mileage, mortgage statements and rental records throughout the year makes tax return time far easier.

✔ Late filing penalties can escalate quickly
Missing deadlines can become expensive very fast.

A lot of landlord tax problems don’t come from doing anything wrong — they come from not knowing the rules early enough.

National Learning at Work Week is a good reminder that understanding the basics can save landlords both stress and money later on.

If you need help with landlord accounts or tax returns, feel free to message Killicks Accountants.

📚 National Learning at Work Week — Sole Trader Tips (Day 1 of 5)

As it’s National Learning at Work Week, we’ll be sharing practical accounting and tax tips all week to help business owners stay organised, informed and tax-efficient.

One thing we see all the time with sole traders?
Leaving receipts, invoices and bookkeeping until January.

Unfortunately, that often leads to:
⚠️ Missed expenses
⚠️ Unnecessary stress
⚠️ Rushed tax returns

A few expenses people commonly forget they may be able to claim:
✔ Mileage & travel costs
✔ Business use of mobile phones
✔ Home office expenses
✔ Professional subscriptions
✔ Equipment & software

Small habits throughout the year can make a huge difference when tax return season comes around.

If you’re a sole trader and want accounting support that keeps things simple and proactive, Killicks Accountants are always happy to help.
