The scary thing about Saturday isn't Halloween. 🎃

It's the paper Self Assessment deadline — and here's the bit that actually
matters: **most people don't need that date at all.**

If you file on paper, HMRC needs your return by 31 October.

If you file online, you have until 31 January.

Nearly everybody files online now, so if you've been quietly panicking about this week, you can probably stop. You've got three more months.

And if you genuinely are sending paper — the 31st is a Saturday, so get it in the post by Friday rather than trusting the weekend.

Either way: earlier is better than January. Always.

Every year, the same thing. People spend December pretending January isn't coming. 🎄

Your tax return can be done now. The deadline is still 31 January and you still pay on 31 January — filing early changes neither of those.

What it changes is that you'll know the number before you do your Christmas spending, you'll have three months to put it aside instead of three weeks, and January will just be January instead of a fortnight of mild panic and receipt archaeology.

Get it off your list. Message me and we'll sort it before the tinsel goes up.

"Don't I already have an accountant?" — yes, and you probably need both. 🤝

Here's the honest version, including the bits we don't do.

A bookkeeper lives in the year as it happens: the records, the VAT, the
payroll, the chasing, keeping everything clean and current. An accountant
takes that and handles year end — statutory accounts, tax planning, the bigger strategic picture.

When the books are tidy all year, your accountant's job gets quicker and cheaper. That's genuinely the relationship. We're not competing for the same work, and any bookkeeper telling you that you don't need an accountant is doing you no favours.

Still unsure which you need for where you are right now? Ask us and we'll tell you straight — even if the answer is "not us yet".

Nobody sends you an invoice for your own time, which is exactly why it's the easiest cost to ignore. 💷

Four hours a month on the books is a conservative estimate for most small businesses. That's 48 hours a year — more than a full working week — and if your time is worth £30 an hour, it's £1,440 of it.

And that's before the expenses you didn't know you could claim, the invoice that sat unchased for two months, and the Sundays.

The numbers above are illustrative — yours will be different. But run them for your own business, then compare it to a fixed monthly fee. It's often a much shorter conversation than people expect.

Ask me what yours would be.

Honestly, trade books are usually more straightforward than people fear. The problem isn't complexity, it's that nobody has time to do paperwork after a ten-hour day on site.

Most late payments aren't people refusing to pay. They're invoices that made paying slightly harder than it needed to be.

Six things, all small:

A unique number so it can be tracked. Both dates, not just one — an invoice without a due date has no deadline to miss. A description the person approving it will actually recognise. VAT shown separately. Bank details right there on the page, not in a previous email. And your payment terms, in writing, every single time.

None of this is complicated. It just quietly removes every excuse for the invoice to sit in someone's pile.

Save this and check the next one before you send it.

Are you paying for things your business doesn’t really need? 👀

Small monthly costs can easily add up — especially when you have duplicate subscriptions, unused tools or avoidable fees.

Take a look at the graphic and see if you can spot the three costs that could go.

💷 How many did you find?

A regular review of your business outgoings can help you understand where your money is going and where you could make savings.

Nobody enjoys chasing money. So take the emotion out of it and make it a system.

Day 0, day 7, day 14, day 21, day 30. Same steps, every invoice, every customer.

When it's a process rather than a decision, it stops feeling personal — and it stops being the thing you put off until Friday afternoon.

Two things most people don't do: invoice the day the work is finished, and actually pick up the phone at day 21. One call moves more than five emails.

And at 30 days you're generally entitled to charge statutory interest on a late commercial payment. Most people never mention it. Just knowing you can changes the conversation.

Save this for the next one that goes overdue.
