In case you missed it, as of April 6 directors who hold shares in their own close company must provide additional information on their Self Assessment tax return, including:

✔️ their company’s registration number
✔️ their highest shareholding percentage during the tax year
✔️ the total dividends received

These disclosures are required even if no dividend tax is due.

HMRC says around 900,000 directors could be affected, and failure to provide the information can result in a fixed £60 penalty.

It's a change that could easily be missed without careful record keeping and accurate tax reporting.

📣 Nearly half of UK adults are not saving into a pension, according to a recent report from the government-backed Pensions Commission.

The report found that many of those not saving are employed, with Gen X identified as being particularly at risk of under-saving for retirement.

Retirement planning can often feel like something to think about “later”, but the reality is many people could spend a third of their lives retired.

The earlier you start reviewing your position, the more options you are likely to have in the future.

We can help you with:
💷 understanding how much you may need to retire comfortably
💷 making use of tax-efficient pension saving
💷 building savings outside pensions for flexibility
💷 using your business to support longer-term retirement planning

Taking advice early can make a significant difference over time.

Did you know eligible employers can reduce their National Insurance bill by up to £10,500 per year through Employment Allowance?

It’s a valuable relief that many businesses may qualify for, but not everyone realises they’re eligible.

Eligibility depends on factors such as:
▪️ the structure of your business
▪️ how many employees you have
▪️ whether you’re part of a group company

If you’re unsure whether your business can claim it, we would be happy to help you review your position.

📣 The Chancellor has announced an increase to the approved tax-free mileage rate for cars and vans rising from 45p to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles.

The change is being backdated to 6 April 2026 and is the first increase in 15 years.

This means that if you use your own car for work, you may now be able to receive more mileage payments tax and National Insurance free.

And if your employer pays less than 55p per mile, you could potentially claim tax relief on the difference.

Other measures announced included:
🚛 a 12-month road tax holiday for HGVs
🚜 a temporary cut to red diesel duty for farmers and rail freight

A useful update for many businesses and employees affected by rising travel and transport costs.

📣 Parents: if your child is staying in education or training after their GCSEs or National 5s, don’t forget to check your Child Benefit claim.

For many families, Child Benefit will automatically stop on August 31 following a child’s 16th birthday, unless HM Revenue & Customs is told their education or training is continuing.

HMRC’s online service for extending claims is already open, so parents who know their teenager’s plans can act now.

👉 And one additional point, in case you missed it. You can now pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge through PAYE, which will be welcome news to those who have been filing a Self Assessment tax return solely to pay the charge.

A record number of taxpayers have already filed their 2025/26 Self Assessment tax returns – including more than 86,000 people on the very first day it opened.

For many, filing early isn’t about being organised for the sake of it. It can mean faster refunds, more time to plan, and less stress later in the year.

Hundreds of thousands of taxpayers are now required to use MTD for Income Tax – yet most still haven’t signed up.

HMRC estimates that around 864,000 people are required to comply from April 2026, but so far only around 280,000 registrations have been completed.

The challenge isn’t just signing up.

For many people, the bigger question is whether they actually have the systems and processes in place to manage quarterly reporting smoothly.

How will records be kept?
How will information be shared with an accountant?
What happens if bookkeeping falls behind?

These are the kinds of practical conversations we’re having with clients more and more.

For expert advice and support with your MTD journey, get in touch with our team today.

💡 Making Tax Digital for Income Tax has now been in force for a month – but many people are still unsure what it means for them.

From 6 April, those with self-employed and/or property income over £50,000 need to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC.

💬 A key question to think about:

How will you be getting your information to your accountant?

🔔 With the first deadline on 7 August, now is a good time to make sure everything is set up and working smoothly.

If you’re not sure where to start, contact us for advice.
