What has an apple tree got to do with investing?

When it comes to thinking about income, return on capital and capital gains - it can help to understand these terms if you think of it in terms of buying an apple tree, planting it in good soil and watching it grow.

Hopefully harvesting the rewards of that initial investment for years to come.

Your income on your initial investment are the apples that grow each year. They will keep coming season after season as long as you don't cut down your tree.

Women may be growing in financial power, but they remain underserved or overlooked by traditional advice models.

Only 46% of women say that speaking to an adviser made them feel more confident about retirement planning.

42% of women report they understand the implications of taking tax-free cash from pensions, compared to 58% of men who do.

Why is this?

when asked, women described their ideal financial adviser as...

Patient, friendly, trustworthy, knowledgeable and be able to explain things in simple terms.

All of our advisers embody these principles. And if you would rather speak to a female adviser, Suzanne and Sue are here to help.

As always if you need any advice please contact your independent financial adviser.

As you may be aware Together with Kenya (UK) is a charity close to our hearts, we as a company sponsor some underprivileged Massai children to go to school.

And now our director Suzanne will be going to Kenya on the 8th September to help by offering her organisational and financial expertise to the people who will be building and running a new school for underprivileged Massai children. The school is due to open in January 2026 and will provide schooling for 300 pupils.

As you can imagine a lot needs to be organised. If you would like to support Suzanne in this challenge please either contact us directly and we will put you in contact with the charity or click the link below to view the support pages.

Another way to support the charity is to share this post, or click on the title and it will take you to ‘movement for good’ part of the Benefact Group that supports small charities and where you can nominate TWK to receive £1000 when it is next drawn on the 22nd September.

With many thanks in advance from all at Pearson.

So who actually pays for all these tariffs that Trump has imposed across the world?

And who are the winners?

Below is a simple example of tariffs in action:

An American company (US plc) imports a product from a British company (UK plc) to sell to US consumers. Pre-tariffs, it would normally pay $100 for the product, which it then sells for $150 to US consumers, for a gross profit of $50.

Donald comes along and imposes a 10% tariff on all US imports of UK goods. So now the US plc has to pay a 10% tax on the cost of the import. It can fund this in three ways...

*1.PAY THE TAX ITSELF: $100 for the product, $10 to the US tax office, and keep the selling price at $150 - it now has a gross profit of $40 (which will hit its share price).

*2. ASK THE UK COMPANY TO LOWER COSTS: UK plc gumpily agrees to cut to $90 as they don't want to lose the business (this hurts UK plc share price). US plc pays $9 to the US tax office, but in effect that has been paid by the UK company. Gross profit is now $51.

*3. PASS THE TAX COST TO THE CONSUMER: US plc puts the price up to $160. That hurts the US consumer, who will probably buy fewer items. And still $10 goes to the US tax office.

But you can of course have a combination of these options...

Out of all these options who is the winner? The US tax office.
The tariffs are operating as a wonderful stealth tax. And still Trump somehow is a winner!

No-one likes to think they will be in a situation where they can no longer communicate what they wish to happen in their lives.

But unfortunately that situation can and does happen, and the only way to ensure your wishes are carried out is to set up a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA).

An LPA is an extremely important document to have in place, arguably more important than a Will - as it helps to organise your finances whilst you are alive. (Ideally both arrangements should be in place).

It entails choosing someone YOU TRUST to make decisions on your behalf if you are not able to. It is not just for older people as ANYONE can have an accident, fall into a coma or have a stroke.

NOT setting up an LPA can be VERY EXPENSIVE.

A client recently promised he was sorting out an LPA following lots of encouraging and nagging by their adviser. Last week we found out he was in hospital after having a stroke. He is unable to communicate and unfortunately had not got round to setting up the LPA. The problems now are:

* The single named bank accounts are now frozen and cannot be used to assist his wife.
* We cannot make the necessary updates to his invested funds as there is no one who can legally authorise this.
* His family will need to apply to the Court of Protection to apply for a Deputyship order, this will cost thousands of pounds and will take around one year to obtain.
* A lengthy and stressful process on top of dealing with the emotional situation.

As always if you need any advice please contact your independent financial adviser.

For Elaine – With Love and Gratitude
On Your Retirement, After 18 Years

Eighteen years—you’ve led the way,
With style and sass, come work or play.
Our office queen, so sharp, so bright,
You brought both order and delight.

With coffee cup (the largest kind!),
You ruled with strength and heart combined.
No chaos ever stood a chance,
When faced with that Elaine-ish glance.

From every laugh to every sigh,
You knew when just to wink—or cry.
You showed us grace, and how to cope,
With lipstick, sass, and endless hope.

So cheers to you, Elaine the great,
You’ve more than earned this perfect fate.
The office won’t be quite the same—
But we’ll smile every time we say your name.
