"We've had a cheaper quote."

It's something every accountant hears from time to time.

And that's okay.

There will always be someone willing to do it cheaper.

But over the last few days I've been reflecting on what actually makes an accountant valuable.

It isn't the accounts.

It isn't the tax return.

It isn't the payroll.

Any accountant can file paperwork.

What matters is what happens when you need help.

During COVID, we sent daily updates explaining what government announcements actually meant for small business owners.

We helped clients understand furlough.

We signposted eligible clients to SEISS grants.

We answered questions, returned calls and helped business owners navigate one of the most uncertain periods many had ever experienced.

And despite everything that happened, not a single AHBS client went out of business during the pandemic.

I'm not claiming that was down to us.

But I am proud that when our clients needed support, guidance and reassurance, we were there.

That's still how we operate today.

We return calls and emails.

We explain things in plain English.

We spot issues before they become expensive problems.

And we stay involved throughout the year, not just when a deadline is due.

Because we don't just prepare the numbers.

We help business owners understand them, act on them and avoid costly mistakes.

Clarity. Confidence. Control.

That's what we're here to provide.

More changes are coming to companies house filings which will affect all micro and small limited companies

Companies House will email the registered email address in a weeks time so keep yours eyes peeled and informed

📢 Changes to accounts filings will come into effect on 1 April 2028.

An overview of what’s changing from 1 April 2028:

- all companies must file accounts digitally via software (iXBRL format)
- small companies and micro entities will need to file profit and loss accounts, but can opt-out of this being displayed on the public register – we’ll share details of the opt-out route in due course
- companies will no longer be able to file abridged accounts
- smaller technical changes, including updates to audit exemptions and accounting reference periods

We're contacting all registered email addresses between 16 and 18 June 2026 with further information about the changes.

The first Making Tax Digital quarter runs from April to June.

The first submission isn’t due until 7 August, but waiting until July often causes unnecessary pressure.

💷 Sole Trader vs Limited Company: What’s The Difference? (Tax Edition)

“Should I become a limited company to save tax?”

It’s one of the most common questions we get from business owners.

The answer?

Not necessarily.

Years ago, the tax savings from operating through a limited company were often much more significant.

Today, the gap is often much smaller than people think.

But tax is only one piece of the puzzle.

A limited company can offer:

✔ Limited liability protection
✔ Greater flexibility around future tax planning
✔ Pension contribution opportunities
✔ Potential profit retention advantages
✔ A more formal business structure
✔ Easier ownership changes in the future

A sole trader structure can offer:

✔ Simplicity
✔ Less administration
✔ Lower accountancy costs
✔ Easier access to your profits

The right answer isn’t determined by what someone else is doing.

It’s determined by:

📊 Profit levels
📊 Future plans
📊 Family circumstances
📊 Risk profile
📊 Whether profits are needed now or later

The question isn’t:

❌ “Which is better?”

The question is:

✅ “Which is right for my situation?”

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

📌 Interesting fact

We recently ran the numbers on a business making £60,000 profit per year.

Assuming:
• One owner
• No other income
• All profits withdrawn personally
• No spouse planning
• No pension contributions

The difference in take-home pay between operating as a sole trader and a limited company was approximately £20 for the year.

That’s why, for many business owners today, the decision is becoming less about tax and more about structure, flexibility, protection and future plans.

If you’re unsure which structure is right for you, drop me a message.

Clarity. Confidence. Control.

👏 As UK Small Business Week comes to an end, we just wanted to say one thing:

Thank you to the local businesses helping keep our communities alive.

This week we’ve highlighted just a small number of the brilliant independent businesses across Ilkeston, Eastwood, Heanor and the wider Erewash area — from coffee shops and bakeries to retailers, service providers and community organisations.

Behind every small business is:
☕ Early mornings
📦 Hard work
💡 Big decisions
❤️ Passion
🤝 Relationships
🏘️ Community spirit

Small businesses do far more than sell products or services.

They create local jobs.
Support local causes.
Sponsor local clubs and events.
Build relationships.
And help give our towns personality and identity.

So whether you’ve supported a local café, bakery, barber, retailer, tradesperson or independent business this week — thank you 👏

And hopefully Small Business Week serves as a reminder that supporting local businesses shouldn’t just last one week.

Strong local businesses help build strong local communities.

👏 As UK Small Business Week 2026 comes to a close, we wanted to take a moment to recognise the incredible local businesses that help make our communities what they are.

This week we’ve been shining a spotlight on just some of the fantastic independent businesses and community organisations across Ilkeston, Eastwood, Heanor and the wider Erewash area.

From coffee shops and bakeries to florists, barbers, retailers, dog walkers, cleaners, financial advisers and community radio — every one of them contributes something valuable to our local economy.

Because when you support a local business, you’re not just buying a product or service.

You’re supporting:
🏠 Local families
👩‍💼 Local jobs
💡 Local entrepreneurs
🤝 Local relationships
🏘️ Local communities

Behind every small business is a person who has taken a risk, invested their time, and worked hard to build something of their own.

At AHBS, we’re proud to work with and support owner-managed businesses throughout the year, not just during Small Business Week.

A huge thank you to everyone who has liked, commented, shared and supported the businesses we’ve featured this week.

Let’s continue supporting local long after the campaign ends.

Because strong local businesses help build strong local communities.

💙 Thank you, Erewash.
