‘Is it still worth paying into a pension?’

Yes.

But not just because “it’s the done thing.”

In the UK, most modern retirement plans rely on building a significant pot of money — not just a guaranteed income stream.

Even if you’ll have:
• State Pension (currently up to ~£12,500 per year)
• Rental income
• Other investments

…for most people, that still won’t fully cover their lifestyle.

So where does the rest come from?

👉 A capital pot.

Let’s put that into perspective:

If you need £40,000 a year in retirement, and your State Pension covers ~£12,500…

You’re left needing ~£27,500 per year.

To sustainably generate that level of income over the long term, you’re likely looking at a pot somewhere in the region of:

💰 £650,000–£750,000+

(And potentially more depending on how long retirement lasts, investment returns, and inflation.)

And that’s exactly why pensions matter.

Because when it comes to building that pot, nothing else gives you the same boost:
• 20%, 40%, or 45% tax relief on contributions
• Tax-efficient growth
• Potential employer contributions

For example:

A higher-rate taxpayer contributing £10,000 only “feels” like £6,000 out of pocket.

That’s an instant 66% uplift before any growth.

So yes — pensions are still one of the most powerful tools available.

Not because they’re exciting.

But because they make a very big number… much easier to reach.

Most people think a financial adviser just picks investments.

That’s like thinking a GP only prescribes tablets.

📊 The reality?
• Vanguard research shows a good financial plan can add around 3% a year in net returns — and most of that has nothing to do with fund selection.
• People with a financial plan are 2x more likely to feel financially confident about the future (Royal London).
• 7 in 10 UK adults say money worries affect their sleep, relationships, or mental health.

So what actually creates the value?

A proper financial planning relationship covers:
– Cashflow & lifestyle planning (can you live the life you want and sleep at night?)
– Tax planning (keeping more of what you earn)
– Protection for family & business
– Retirement clarity (not guesswork)
– Estate & inheritance planning
– Behavioural coaching during uncertainty and market volatility

📉 When markets fall, the biggest risk isn’t performance.
It’s panic, poor decisions, and no plan to fall back on.

📈 When life goes well, the biggest risk isn’t missing returns.
It’s drifting without direction.

The real return of financial planning isn’t just money.
It’s confidence.
Clarity.
Control.
And knowing that whatever life throws at you — there’s a plan.

That peace of mind?

For most clients I meet with, that’s priceless.
