UK Directors Identity Verification

If you are a director of a UK company, you should have received an email from Companies House to verify your identity.

For most of our clients, the process has been easy to follow:
1. set up a GOV.UK One Login account
2. Use the new account to log into Companies House and verify your ID.
3. Make a note of the ID reference.
4. Provide the ID reference to your accountant.

Watch out for scams. Check that the email comes from:
[email protected]

Be careful about who you give the ID code to. Treat it with the same high privacy rights as your National Insurance number.

The process gets tricky if you have no passport.

The ID verification request applies to major shareholders (PSCs), but the deadlines are different. This bit is causing us a headache. The deadline is a two week window and is based on your birthday or something weird.

It's a new process. As ever, we will work it out, and it will become routine.

Life is full of changes. We are used to dealing with change. We help our clients to comply by interpreting the rules into simple instructions.

Our doors are currently closed to new business. The doors re-open on 8th February 2026. In the meantime, if you want to start a conversation about becoming a client, you can find me on LinkedIn.

Do you have crypto assets?

Did you know that if you buy, then sell the crypto coins, it typically triggers a capital gain transaction.

Your tax-free capital gains allowance is current £3,000 per tax year (2025/26), and you need to report any gains above this figure via a tax return to HMRC. You will be taxed on the gains.

HMRC have a section on their website about crypto assets, which explains the rules.

Most platforms provide data to HMRC, and you should have received a notification from the platform on this subject.

If you are doing a lot of transactions, have a look at Koinly to record your gains and losses. There is a subscription, but it's worth it in my view. https://koinly.io/

Otherwise, you need to keep a log of assets bought, price sold at, gain made, and then convert the values into sterling.

The UK tax can not be paid in crypto (at the moment).

Special rules apply if you sell and then buy the same crypto assets within 30 days.

In the same tax year (6th April to 5th April), you can offset losses and gains. Excess losses can be carried forward but not back to the previous tax years.

If you do not report your gains when you should, you may also have to pay penalties and interest when HMRC catch up with you (from the records supplied by the platforms).

Please note this is not tax advice - it's just a prompt to alert you about the tax rules on crypto assets and to avoid paying avoidable penalties and interest.
