According to analysis by accountancy firm Price Bailey, 65% of penalties that were challenged were cancelled. Many related to automatic fines for late filing and late payment, including the ยฃ100 penalty for missing the Self Assessment deadline.

The figures are a useful reminder that if you receive an HMRC penalty and believe there are reasonable grounds to challenge it, it may be worth reviewing your options.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has set out new steps aimed at making it easier for small businesses to access lending, following a review of the current market.

The review found that regulation itself is not the main barrier to lending, with the FCA now looking at ways to support greater access to finance while maintaining appropriate protections.

New figures from the Office for National Statistics show GDP continued to grow in the second quarter of the year, although at a slower rate than the 0.6% recorded in the first quarter.

GDP also grew by 0.3% in June alone, following no growth in May.

Services provided the biggest boost during the quarter, growing by 0.5%. Construction increased by 0.3%, while production showed no growth.

GDP per head was also 1% higher than the same period last year.

While the figures show the economy is continuing to grow, higher energy costs, inflation and wider economic uncertainty could still put pressure on businesses and households over the coming months.

The change will affect sole traders and landlords who are already using MTD for Income Tax but have not formally signed up.

HMRC says more than 570,000 taxpayers have now registered, but around 294,000 people in the first mandatory group are still thought to be unregistered.

If you are affected, you can register before HMRC automatically enrols you. This gives you time to check your details, make sure your software is ready and understand what you need to submit.

There are no penalty points for late quarterly updates during the 2026/27 tax year.

However, from 6 April 2027, the points-based penalty system will apply. One point will be added for each missed quarterly deadline, with a ยฃ200 penalty once four points are reached.

If MTD applies to you, it is worth getting everything in place before HMRC contacts you.

The Department for Education has confirmed new student loan interest rates for the 2026/27 year, with increases across all repayment plans.

From 1 September 2026:

โ€ข Plan 1: 4.1%, up from 3.2%
โ€ข Plan 2: between 4.1% and 6%, depending on income
โ€ข Plan 3: 6%
โ€ข Plan 5: 4.1%, up from 3.2%

For Plan 2 and Plan 3 borrowers, the Government is keeping a 6% interest rate cap in place. Without it, the maximum rate would have increased to 7.1%.

The new rates will apply from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027.

If you have a student loan, it is worth checking which repayment plan you are on and how the new rate could affect your balance.

That is 1m more than the Bank predicted in December, with the change linked to the economic impact of the Iran war and higher energy prices.

The Bankโ€™s latest Financial Stability Report said the increase should be less severe than the payment shocks seen in recent years. A typical owner-occupier coming off a fixed-rate deal in the next two years is expected to pay around ยฃ45 more a month. By comparison, those refinancing between late 2022 and the end of 2024 faced an average rise of ยฃ120 a month.

However, some households face a much sharper increase. Around 750,000 homeowners currently paying less than 3% interest are due to come off those deals this year. The Bank expects their repayments to rise by an average of ยฃ170 a month.

More than eight in 10 mortgage customers are on fixed-rate deals, usually lasting two or five years. Their payments stay the same until the deal ends and they choose a new one.

Before the Iran conflict, more than 2m borrowers with two-year fixed deals expiring by the end of 2028 had been expected to remortgage at similar rates, with some seeing repayments fall. The Bank now says falling repayments are less likely.
