Mileage Allowance increased by 10p per mile to 55p
Chancellor Rachel Reeves finally announced the long-awaited increase in the “Approved Mileage Allowance Payment” on 21st May.
This allowance has been frozen at 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles driven in each tax year since 2011. But, during a statement in the House of Commons, she confirmed it would increase by 10p to 55p per mile; backdated to April 2026.
The rate for any mileage over 10,000 in a tax year remains at 25p per mile.
The Chancellor also announced other measures to help families over the summer holidays.
These include:
From 25 June to 1 September 2026, VAT will temporarily be cut from 20% to 5% on:
- Children's restaurant meals
- Child and family tickets for cinemas, theatres, concerts, shows and exhibitions
- Child and adult admission tickets for attractions including amusement parks, fairs, museums, zoos, soft play centres, circuses, adventure parks, nature reserves, wildlife parks and observation decks
The Government says it "expects businesses to pass on VAT savings to customers".
