New to Self Assessment for 2025/26? Check whether 5 October 2026 applies to you.

If you need to send a tax return and have not sent one before, HMRC says you must tell them by 5 October after the end of the tax year. Registration is separate from submitting the return and paying any tax due.

Unsure? Check early, and message the Greengrass team if you need help understanding the next step.

An HMRC letter can feel urgent, but the first step is a careful check rather than a rushed reply.

1. Read the whole letter
Identify the tax, period, reference, response deadline and action requested.

2. Check that the contact is genuine
Use GOV.UK guidance on genuine HMRC contacts and official contact channels. If anything feels suspicious, do not rely on an unexpected link or contact detail until it has been checked.

3. Gather the records before replying
Find the relevant returns, statements, calculations and correspondence. Do not guess, and do not ignore a genuine deadline.

Different letters require different responses. Ask the Greengrass team to review the letter before you reply. General information only.

Thinking about changing accountants, but not sure how to start?

Ask five questions:
1. Who will be my day-to-day contact?
2. How will communication work?
3. What is included and excluded?
4. What records or access will be needed?
5. How will the handover be managed?

You do not need to criticise the current adviser or have every detail decided. Start by testing fit, communication and scope.

Bookkeeping is becoming a business problem when it stops providing useful information and starts consuming the time needed to run the business.

Three warning signs:
• the records are weeks or months behind
• you cannot quickly see what customers owe or what bills and tax are due
• catch-up work repeatedly takes over evenings or creates a deadline rush

The answer is not always new software. It may be a clearer routine, better source records, agreed responsibilities or outside support.

If the backlog is growing, deal with it before the next deadline makes the problem harder. Ask the Greengrass team to discuss what would make the records manageable.

A good month cannot be judged from turnover alone.

Five numbers to read together:
1. Sales recorded - what income was earned?
2. Cash available - what is in the bank now?
3. Customer invoices unpaid - how much is still to be collected?
4. Bills and tax due soon - what cash is already committed?
5. Profit after the period’s costs - what remains after matching income and expenses?

Each number answers a different question. Together, they show whether growth is translating into cash and whether the next commitments are covered.

There is no single universal five-number dashboard for every company. The useful measures depend on the business, its timing and its goals.

Paying staff early for the bank holiday?

HMRC says the FPS should normally show the usual contractual payday, not the earlier date the money reaches the employee. Submit the FPS on or before that normal payday.

The summer bank holiday in England and Wales is Monday 31 August 2026. Check the payroll dates before processing.

Profit and cash answer different questions.

A business can report a profit while cash is tight because income may be recorded before customers pay, while other cash movements may not reduce profit in the same period.

A simplified fictional example:
• sales recorded: £20,000
• costs recorded: £15,000
• accounting profit: £5,000
• customer cash received: £12,000
• cash paid out: £14,000

The business shows a £5,000 profit, but cash has fallen by £2,000.

Common reasons include unpaid customer invoices, buying equipment or stock, VAT or Corporation Tax payments, loan repayments and dividends.

Review the profit and loss account together with the bank position and near-term commitments. Figures are illustrative only.
