If you're selling homemade crafts and Christmas cards at markets this December, you will need to keep within the £1,000 threshold, or you may face a demand from HMRC.

With Christmas markets starting to pop up across the country, HMRC have been warning people to keep a close eye on their earnings during the festive period.

Some dates for your diary 📆

For anyone in the first round of the Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD for ITSA) there will be a lot going on next year, and a lot to keep track of!
(The first group is anyone who's self-employed and/or rental turnover is greater than £50,000)

If you are self-employed, you must keep your records for at least 5 years after the 31st January submission deadline of the relevant tax year.

If you are a limited company, you must keep records for 6 years from the end of the last company financial year that they relate to.

If something does happen to your records (like rats eating them 😆) then you must do your best to provide and keep figures.

Unfortunately, the old "rats ate my homework" won't go down well with HMRC, they're not fans of rodent related tax loopholes! 🐀📉😅

The Employment Allowance (EA) is the amount that employers can deduct from their annual NI bill.

For 25/26 the EA was more than doubled!

However, a company that has only one employee who is also a director is excluded from this entitlement.

But there is some good news 🥳 there's a way around it, and it won't cost you much at all 🙌

Would you be able to recognise a fake HMRC communication?

More than 170,000 scam incidents were reported to HMRC in the last 12 months.

28% of these reports involved fake tax return claims.

Scammers have been contacting taxpayers by email, text and phone.
