🚨 New Tax Year, New Rules – Are You Ready? 🚨

The new tax year has officially started (from 6 April), and HM Revenue & Customs has introduced some important updates that could impact you or your business 👇

💻 Making Tax Digital (MTD) is here
If you’re a sole trader or landlord earning over £50,000, you now need to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates using HMRC-approved software.

📈 Dividend tax increase
Dividend tax rates have risen by 2%
• Basic rate: now 10.75%
• Higher rate: now 35.75%

With the allowance still only £500, it’s time to review profit extraction strategies.

💸 Capital Gains Tax changes
Business Asset Disposal Relief and Investors’ Relief rates have increased to 18%.

📊 Frozen income tax thresholds
Personal allowance remains at £12,570, meaning more people may pay higher tax due to rising incomes (fiscal drag).

🏠 End of working from home tax relief
Employees can no longer claim this relief moving forward.

⚠️ Other key changes to note:
• Changes to inheritance tax relief thresholds for businesses & farms
• Updates to tax codes (some reliefs removed automatically)
• Ongoing shift toward a fully digital tax system

👉 What does this mean for you?
Now is the time to review your tax position, plan ahead, and ensure you stay compliant.

📩 Need help navigating the changes? Get in touch – we’ve got you covered.

📢 Reminder: Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is coming!

From April 2026, Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax will begin to roll out, changing the way many individuals and landlords report their income to HMRC.

If you’re:
✔️ Self-employed
✔️ A landlord
✔️ Earning over £50,000 (threshold reduces to £30,000 from April 2027)

You’ll need to:
🔹 Keep digital records
🔹 Submit quarterly updates to HMRC
🔹 Use MTD-compatible software

⏳ It might seem like a big change, but getting set up early will make the transition smooth and stress-free.

Thinking about going limited? Especially with dividend tax changes coming in April 2026, here’s what it really means for your money.

When you’re a sole trader, everything you earn is your income. But once you set up as a limited company, you and your business become two separate entities and that changes how you pay yourself.

One of the biggest differences?

You can start taking dividends.

Dividends are payments made from your post-tax profits a reward for being a shareholder in your own company.

Most directors pay themselves a mix of salary and dividends because it’s usually more tax-efficient than salary alone.

But before you do:
💎 Your company must be making a profit
💎 You need to set aside Corporation Tax
💎 You have to document the dividends properly, even if you’re the only director

Dividend tax rates from April 2026:
💎 £500 tax-free dividend allowance
💎 No National Insurance on dividends
💎 Taxed at lower rates than income tax:

Basic rate (total income up to £50,270):
👉 2025/26 – 8.75%
👉 From April 2026 – 10.75%

Higher rate (£50,271 to £125,140 total income):
👉 2025/26 – 33.75%
👉 From April 2026 – 35.75%

Additional rate (over £125,140 total income):
👉 2025/26 – 39.35%
👉 From April 2026 – 39.35% (no change)

If you’re already thinking about going limited or just want to understand how to take money out tax-efficiently it’s worth getting clear on your options early.

A bit of planning now can save you money (and stress) later on. #
