🎄🎄🎄THINKING ABOUT CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR YOUR EMPLOYEES? 🎄🎄🎄

Here’s a timely reminder about Trivial benefits.

As business owners, if you want to show your team a bit of extra appreciation at this time of year.. the good news is that you can give each employee a gift up to £50 including VAT, totally tax-free.

Remember the rules; the gift isn’t cash or a cash voucher, it isn’t a reward for their work or performance and it isn’t in the terms of their contract

That means:

- No Income Tax or National Insurance
- No HMRC forms

Just a simple, thoughtful “thank you” that doesn’t come with a surprise bill in January.

🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄

If you’re unsure what counts or want to make sure you’re making the most of the Trivial Benefits allowance this year, we’re always here for a chat.

5 STAR CLIENT REVIEW

“I can’t thank Mike at Backup Accounts Limited enough for the fantastic service I received. They brought all my accounting records fully up to date and took care of filing my self-assessment on time, taking a huge weight off my shoulders.

When HMRC issues started piling up, Mike handled everything directly — from setting up a manageable payment plan to successfully appealing penalties that I thought were unavoidable. Their professionalism, attention to detail, and clear communication made the whole process smooth and stress-free.

I’m extremely grateful for their support and would highly recommend their services to anyone who needs reliable, expert help with their tax affairs.”

Who needs to file a Self Assessment Tax Return?

A taxpayer is required to file a tax return for a tax year if they meet any of the criteria for that tax year.

These include the following for 2024/25 based on HMRC’s guidance:

- PAYE income threshold of £150,000 for 2023/24, up from
£100,000 for 2022/23.
- Self-employment income over £1,000.
- Rental income over £2,500 net or £10,000 gross.
- Income from savings or investments over £10,000.
- Income from dividends over £10,000.
- Other untaxed income of £2,500 or more.
- Claims for tax relief for employment expenses of
more than £2,500.
- Liability to the high income child benefit charge (HICBC),
if the client is not using the new HICBC PAYE service.
- Capital gains in excess of £3,000 or if the value of the
assets disposed of are in excess of £50,000. Capital
gains tax changes (CGT) for 2024/25, including the
in-year rate change and the reduction of the CGT-free
annual exemption to £3,000 (this will be discussed in
more depth in a later article in the series).

IDENTITY VERIFICATION WITH COMPANIES HOUSE WILL BECOME MANDATORY IN THE AUTUMN OF 2025

No ID = No filing

This new requirement is part of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act, designed to make the UK business register more secure and to help prevent fraud.

Grab your passport or driving licence and get verified early.

You can verify your identity one of three ways:
1: online using GOV.UK One Login – if you have the identity documents or information required. Use this link: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/verify-your-identity-for-companies-house

2: in person at selected Post Offices – you must live in the UK and will need to use the ‘Verify your identity for Companies House’ service first to find out if you can verify this way.

3: using an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) – for example, an accountant or solicitor who has registered as a Companies House authorised agent (you’ll need to provide suitable identity documents).

There is a big change coming for small businesses in the UK: P&L accounts will soon be public!!

From April 2027, it will be a Companies House requirement for even small and micro companies to file a profit and loss account that will be made publicly available on the register.

For many small business owners, this is a significant shift. Until now, you could keep your financial performance private. That option’s going away.

Here’s what else is changing:

- Filing will be software only, paper and web submissions are being phased out
- This is part of a broader effort to improve transparency, detect fraud, and increase trust in UK businesses
- You will have 21 months to adapt. One full accounting year plus 9 months

The goal is clear: reduce misuse of limited disclosure rules and give lenders, suppliers, and partners better visibility when deciding who to work with.

But for founders, freelancers, and small companies who’ve kept their numbers tight to their chest, this will feel like a big adjustment.
