This week’s Three Things Thursday includes why rising minimum wages are now affecting almost every business — not just hospitality and retail.

The real issue isn’t just higher entry-level pay. It’s the ripple effect across salaries, National Insurance, pensions, overtime, and overall business costs.

We’re also seeing why this is accelerating automation, AI, and productivity changes across the economy.

“Can we just get the VAT bill down a bit?”

It’s a conversation accountants hear more often than you’d think… but VAT returns aren’t negotiations, estimates, or “best guesses”. They’re legal declarations to HMRC.

A Scottish accountant has just avoided jail after submitting false VAT returns for restaurant owners who did end up in prison. It’s a stark reminder that trying to “save a bit of tax” the wrong way can have very real consequences.

There are always better ways to improve profitability than fiddling the numbers.

We’ll be posting a full article on the Acumenica website this week looking at the case, why these situations happen, and why “just this once” is rarely ever just once.

If you run a business and even vaguely pay attention to your marketing, you've probably wondered if Google reviews actually matter.

Well, they do. Probably more than you think.

Most people assume reviews are just there to make you look credible once someone lands on your page. But there is a bigger picture:

Reviews help people find you in the first place.

Google uses review volume, quality, and how recent they are as ranking signals. More good reviews = better visibility in local search and maps.

If you have no reviews, you're practically invisible.

And here's the interesting part: People don't actually trust perfection.

A business with 80 reviews averaging at 4.7 stars is far more credible than one with 3 suspiciously clean 5-star reviews from someone's mum and accountant.

The best reviews answer the questions customers are too polite to ask:
- Are they reliable?
- Do they communicate properly?
- Are they good to deal with?
- Will this become a complete nightmare?

That’s why detailed reviews are gold. They do the selling for you while you get on with running the business.

Reviews are digital word of mouth.

Quietly influencing who finds you… and who chooses you.

Do you actually answer your emergency contact number?

We learned this the hard way this week: not answering it is the fastest way to lose your customers’ trust.

Picture this: An Airbnb flooding at midnight. No tools. No obvious water shut-off. In a foreign country.

So we did what anyone would do: we called the emergency contact number.

This is an emergency… they’ll answer, right?

Wrong.

We were sent to voicemail 20 times over three hours.

So ask yourself, do you list an emergency number just to tick a box, or do you actually answer it every time to solve a problem?

Because from your customer’s perspective, the moment something goes wrong is the moment your service is truly tested.

If you don’t pick up, that number may as well not exist.

Worse, it damages trust. You said you’d be there. And you weren’t.
