During a recent client meeting, we discovered that the client had been a 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐫-𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬, paying into a pension throughout that time — but had never completed a Self Assessment.

They were receiving the standard 𝟐𝟎% 𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐚𝐱 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐟, but were entitled to more (𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎%)!

Five years of missed additional relief is a significant amount of money.

For many years, pensions have been one of the most tax-efficient assets to pass on. However, from 6 April 2027, most unused pension funds and pension death benefits will form part of your estate for inheritance tax calculations. As a result, thousands more families could face an inheritance tax liability for the first time.

Inheritance tax is generally due by the end of the sixth month following death, yet administering an estate can often take significantly longer. For families with substantial pension wealth, these changes could create both a larger tax liability and additional pressure to access funds quickly.

✅ Current IHT Allowances Remain:
• Nil Rate Band: £325,000
• Residence Nil Rate Band: up to £175,000 per person (where applicable)
• Married couples and civil partners may still be able to pass on up to £1 million tax-efficiently through transferable allowances.

𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐛𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧 𝐮𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐚𝐱 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥? 💷

With savings rates much higher than they were a few years ago, more people are finding that the interest they earn is taking them over their Personal Savings Allowance.

Many people don't realise that savings held in fixed-rate accounts, bonds or other savings products can create a tax liability once certain thresholds are exceeded.

For example:

🔹 Basic rate taxpayers can earn £1,000 of savings interest tax-free

🔹 Higher rate taxpayers can earn £500

🔹 Additional rate taxpayers have no Personal Savings Allowance

Beyond these limits, you may need to pay tax on your savings interest and could need to report this to HMRC through Self Assessment.

There are also planned changes to 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐈𝐒𝐀𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟕, making it more important than ever to understand where your money is held and whether it's working efficiently.
