Good tax planning is not about last-minute decisions. It is about looking ahead and making informed choices with the right support around you.

Working alongside our taxation partners, we can support a range of tax planning needs, including inheritance tax planning, capital gains tax planning, share option schemes, R&D tax credits and property tax planning.

These are areas where timing, structure and advice can make a real difference.

For many business owners and individuals, tax planning feels like something to think about later. In reality, the earlier you start the conversation, the more options you are likely to have.

The goal is not just compliance. It is clarity, preparation and making sure your plans are working in the most effective way possible.

One of the most famous accounting horror stories is the collapse of Carillion.

At its peak, Carillion was one of the UK’s biggest construction and outsourcing companies. Thousands of employees, major government contracts, and a reputation that looked solid from the outside.

But behind the scenes, the numbers were telling a very different story.

Projects were running over budget.
Cash flow was tightening.
Debt was growing.

Instead of addressing it early, losses were delayed, contracts were overvalued and the true financial position was not clearly reflected.

On paper, things still looked manageable. In reality, the business was under serious pressure.

In 2018, it collapsed.

The impact was huge
→ over 3,000 jobs lost
→ suppliers left unpaid
→ projects across the UK disrupted

The biggest lesson was not about complex accounting rules. It was about visibility and honesty in the numbers. Problems in business rarely appear overnight. They build slowly, often hidden behind growth, busy teams and strong revenue figures.

But if the numbers are not understood properly, or are ignored, small issues can turn into very big ones. Most businesses will never face something on that scale.

But the principle still applies.

Your numbers are not just for reporting.
They are early warning signs, decision tools and a reflection of what is really going on.

Ignoring them does not make the problem go away.
It just delays when you see it.

And by then, it is often much harder to fix.

There are a number of points in business where a company valuation becomes important.

It might be because you are buying or selling a business. It could be because shares are being sold or transferred. Or it may be part of setting up an employee share scheme.

In all of these situations, having a clear and properly considered valuation matters.

A valuation is not just a number pulled from turnover or profit. It looks at the wider picture and gives you a more informed basis for decision-making.

That can be important for negotiations, planning and making sure everyone involved has a realistic understanding of the business.

If a company valuation is on your radar, it is always better to look at it early rather than wait until the pressure is on.

Most business decisions feel harder than they need to be.

Not because business owners are incapable. Not because every choice is hugely complicated. More often, it is because they are trying to make decisions without clear information in front of them.

When you do not properly know your numbers, everything can feel heavier.

You second-guess yourself. You put things off. You go round in circles. You rely on gut feeling when what you really need is visibility.

That can show up in all sorts of ways.

- Can I actually afford to bring someone into the business?
- Is this service making money, or just keeping me busy?
- Should I invest in new software, marketing or support?
- Do I need to raise my prices?
- What exactly needs to change here?

Without the right figures, those decisions can feel stressful and personal. With the right figures, they become much clearer.

That does not mean every answer is simple, but it does mean you have something solid to work from.

When you understand your turnover, your costs, your profit and your cash flow, you can make decisions from a place of knowledge rather than panic.

You stop guessing.
You stop hoping.
You stop avoiding.

And that shift is powerful.

Because confidence in business does not come from pretending everything is fine or crossing your fingers that it will work out. It comes from knowing where you stand, understanding what the numbers are telling you and using that information to move forward properly.

Clarity creates confidence.
And confident decisions are usually better decisions.

VAT catches more businesses out than almost anything else.

Not because it is complicated, but because it is easy to ignore until it matters.

You are collecting money that is not yours, and it needs to be there when the time comes.

The problem is that it is very easy to spend it without realising!
Simple habit - separate it early, track it properly and do not treat it as available cash.

One small shift = big difference later!!

The most expensive Easter egg ever made sold for over £7,000.

And yes… it was chocolate.

Created by luxury British chocolatier William Curley, this egg was handcrafted, intricately designed and filled with high-end chocolates and truffles.

No toys. No supermarket offers. Just pure luxury.

It sold out.

Which just proves - people are not always buying what something is
they are buying how it feels, how it is presented and the experience around it

Still… £7,000 for an Easter egg.

Can you believe it?

Today we took the full team to Dishoom for breakfast (if you have tried their breakfast naans - you will understand why!)

Why?
Because sometimes a small thank you and we appreciate you is needed.

The A Team!

Today Katie was at The Growth Club with Clarity Consultants Ltd, delivering a practical session on the numbers every business owner should know.

And this was not theory.

This was a room full of women sitting down, getting stuck in and actually building something they can use in their business.

→ understanding their key numbers
→ making sense of what they really mean
→ creating a simple spreadsheet to track them going forward

Because knowing your numbers is one thing.
Using them with confidence is what really changes how you run your business.

Katie said it best
“It’s so good to see women investing in their business growth in a practical way. Not just talking about it, but actually taking the time to understand their numbers and build something they can use moving forward.”

A brilliant session, and even better to see that level of focus and commitment in the room.

End of the month already!
Before you jump into April, it is worth asking yourself one simple question.

Do you actually know how this month went in your business?

Not just how it felt - but what the numbers say:

→ what came in
→ what went out
→ what is left
→ what needs attention

Most business owners move straight into the next month without looking back.

But this is where the real learning is.

Clarity does not come from doing more.
It comes from understanding what has already happened.

Running a business can feel lonely sometimes

You’re responsible for the decisions, the finances, the risks and the future of the company.

One of the things we hear most often from clients is that they feel better simply having someone to talk things through with.

An accountant should not just appear once a year with a set of accounts. The right support can help you plan ahead, understand your numbers and feel confident about where your business is heading.

That is exactly what we aim to provide.
