I swear half the reason people hate VAT is because nobody actually explains it properly 😭

People are out here submitting returns every quarter without fully understanding what the boxes even mean, they’re just trusting the software and praying it’s correct 🫠

So here’s a simple breakdown of:
• what each VAT box means
• what should (and shouldn’t) go in them
• and the mistakes I see all the time from DIY bookkeeping

Because honestly, a lot of VAT issues could be avoided if people were taught this stuff in school rather than trigonometry 🤣

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is people thinking they can just “choose” whether they’re employed or self-employed.

In reality, HMRC look at what actually happens day-to-day - not just what the contract says 👀

Things like:
• who controls the work
• whether someone can send a substitute
• financial risk
• set hours
• being part of the business/team

can all matter when deciding employment status.

Getting it wrong can lead to tax issues, holiday pay claims, IR35 problems and HMRC investigations… so it’s definitely something worth understanding properly.

Sometimes the hardest part of being self-employed isn’t the work… it’s trying to figure everything out on your own. 🤍

Tax. Payments on account. Deadlines. What you can claim. What you can’t.
Most people were never actually taught this stuff properly.

So when clients tell me they finally understand their finances for the first time after years in business, that genuinely means a lot.

You should never feel embarrassed for asking questions about your own money. Ever.

My job isn’t just to “do the accounts”.
It’s to help you actually understand what’s going on behind the scenes too.

Florists genuinely have SO many hidden costs behind the scenes 🌼

People see the final bouquet on Instagram but not the 6am flower runs, the petrol, the packaging everywhere, the wedding setup days, the subscriptions coming out every month or the hours spent replying to enquiries at home 😭

I think a lot of florists don’t actually realise how much they’re spending in the business because loads of the expenses feel “small” on their own… but together they add up FAST.

And honestly, mileage alone is one I see missed all the time 👀

Also a little reminder because HMRC loves to ruin the fun:
if you’d wear the clothing normally, you usually can’t claim it 😂

…social media LOVES a half-truth 😅

The reality? Choosing between sole trader and limited company depends on profit levels, risk, admin, future plans, and how you actually want to run your business.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer - and what works for one business might be the worst option for another.

Taking money from your company account feels very “I’ll sort it later” until HMRC sends a lovely little s455 bill 😭💸

A lot of directors don’t even realise they’ve created a director’s loan account.

If the money you’ve taken isn’t:
• salary
• dividends
• reimbursed expenses

…HMRC can treat it as borrowing from your company.

And if it’s still sitting unpaid 9 months + 1 day after your year end, your company could get hit with a temporary 35.75% tax charge 👀

The bit people usually don’t know:
– partial repayments still help
– the company pays the tax
– you can normally reclaim it later
– but the reclaim timing is painfully slow

Honestly one of the most common “wait… WHAT?” conversations I have with limited company owners 😅

Definitely one to keep an eye on if you move money between business + personal accounts a lot!

SOLE TRADER vs LTD COMPANY 👀

There’s so much misinformation online about “the best” business structure… but the truth is: it depends on YOU.

A limited company doesn’t automatically mean lower tax.
A sole trader doesn’t mean you’re “not a real business”.
And neither setup is completely risk free.

The right choice depends on things like:
✨ Your profit levels
✨ How you take money from the business
✨ Future plans
✨ VAT
✨ Admin & compliance
✨ Risk and protection
✨ Whether you need flexibility or structure

I see so many people rush into becoming a Ltd company because TikTok told them to 😅 when sometimes it actually leaves them worse off once you factor in accountancy fees, VAT, payroll, Companies House filings, corporation tax, directors loans etc.

And on the flip side… staying sole trader too long can sometimes mean missing opportunities for better tax planning too 👀

There’s no “one size fits all” answer, good tax planning is strategic, personal and should evolve as your business grows!

Student loans don’t disappear when you go self-employed, they just show up in your tax bill instead 🫠

This catches so many people out! Especially when that first tax bill lands and it’s higher than expected.

The key things to remember:
✨you only repay once you go over your threshold
✨it’s based on your plan
✨and it’s all handled through your tax return

“Salary” and “wage” aren’t just different words…

They actually change how and when you get paid and even how things like holiday pay and pensions are worked out.

Quick way to think of it:
💼 Salary = fixed pay, same every month
⏱ Wage = paid per hour, changes depending on what you work

Simple… but it catches people out allll the time. I can’t lie sometimes I will accidentally use them interchangeably 🫣
