We've been running Somershire hamster rescue sanctuary for 27 years and have often found that some years we seem to take in predominantly one species during the year.
Some years the largest percentage of hamsters coming in are roborovski's, other years it might be winter whites or hybrids of these....well 2026 is already looking like it's going to be a Syrian year.
Here's 3 of the Syrians that have recently come in to the sanctuary.

The somershire hamster rescue sanctuary team (that's me and Ged) had a busy weekend at the London Pet show Live at Olympia in London.
This is an educational event covering not just small furries, but cats, dogs, reptiles, birds etc.
As well as having our hamster rescue and information stand I gave a talk to the public about hamster care.
We met some lovely people who had stands selling lots of lovely goodies, treats, toys and enrichment for small pets including hamsters.
Wanted to mention Dandelion Burrow and Hope's healthy Treats who had some excellent enrichment for small animals, visit them on Facebook.

A plea for help.....
Baby's Bird and Small animal rescue in Wales is helping with a rescue of 300+ domestic mice.
This is more than one rescue can deal with as rescues are already full.

Please, if anyone can help, even if it is to give a home to 1 or 2 mice, please contact the rescue.

Somershire hamster rescue sanctuary is 25 years old this year. But its not a birthday we will celebrate.
Why you might ask.
Well, because, in an ideal world there would be no need for rescuers, rescue centres or sanctuaries.
In an ideal world no animal would be unwanted. No animal would be "factory farmed" for the pet trade.
Backyard breeders and puppy farms wouldn't exist.
But they do, so we will carry on for another 25 years.

Alexander, who is the font of all rabbit knowledge and must be listened too says" if you are thinking of getting a rabbit for Easter, please think again". They are a 8 to 12 year(or more) commitment. Please wait until AFTER Easter and then contact your local reputable rabbit rescue where you can adopt a comptable pair of neutered rabbits and recieve all the advice and support you need from the rescue.
Don't be dumb, listen to Alexander.
