👋 Two new faces, two exciting journeys ahead! Meet Harry and James!

We're delighted to welcome Harry and James, our newest apprentices, to the Griffin team! 💚

Both have chosen to begin their careers in accountancy through apprenticeships, combining professional qualifications with practical experience, learning from colleagues and getting involved in real client work.

We caught up with them to find out a little more about their journeys so far...

💬 Meet James

After enjoying bookkeeping during work experience, James knew accountancy was something he wanted to pursue.

What attracted him to Griffin? The personal and welcoming recruitment process and the opportunity to learn while working.

Although he admits to feeling nervous before his first day, those nerves quickly disappeared thanks to the support of his new colleagues.

He's already enjoying getting involved in different tasks, is looking forward to joining the office football team and is excited about developing his accountancy and communication skills!

💬 Meet Harry

Harry always enjoyed working with numbers at school and college, particularly the opportunity to combine this with working with people.

For him, choosing an apprenticeship was a natural decision, providing the chance to specialise and start building a career straight away.

His first impressions of Griffin? A friendly, welcoming team and a professional environment where he already feels at home.

He's particularly excited about working with clients, discovering different businesses and developing his independence.

One ambition for his first year? Becoming Employee of the Month! 🏆

🌱 Investing in people. Developing future talent - At Griffin, apprenticeships are about much more than gaining qualifications.

They're about building confidence, developing practical skills, learning from experienced colleagues and creating opportunities for long-term careers.

We're proud to support people at every stage of their professional journey, from their very first day through to qualification and beyond.

Welcome to the team, Harry and James! We're really looking forward to seeing where your journeys take you👏

💡 Embracing AI. Investing in our people. Learning together.

At Griffin, we're always looking for ways to learn, develop and improve how we work, both for our people and our clients.

One area we're actively exploring is Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Over the coming weeks and months, our team will be continuing their internal AI training, sharing ideas and best practice across departments and exploring how this rapidly evolving technology can support the way we work🤝

But there's something really important at the heart of all this. Our people.

Our accountancy knowledge, experience and professional judgement remain at the heart of the advice and service we provide to our clients.

We're exploring how AI can help streamline more routine tasks, improve efficiencies and free up valuable time for our team to focus on what really matters - supporting our clients, understanding their businesses and providing the expertise and personal service they value.

🌱 As a Certified B Corporation, investing in our people and continually looking for ways to improve how we operate are important parts of who we are.

That means encouraging curiosity, sharing knowledge, developing new skills and creating opportunities for our team to grow.

A big thank you to the team at Optimising IT | B Corp™, a fellow Certified B Corporation, for delivering the training and sharing their knowledge and expertise with us👏

Because for us, building a better business isn't just about embracing new technology.

It's about bringing our people along on the journey💚

👋 GRIFFIN TO KNOW YOU...Meet Harvey Field!

It's time for another Griffin To Know You, where we introduce the people behind Griffin Chartered Accountants! 💙

This time we're getting to know Harvey, one of our Audit & Accounts Seniors, whose role has developed considerably since he first started out in accountancy.

From building his confidence with clients to taking on more complex work and now supporting newer members of the team, Harvey has certainly come a long way!

💬 What has made the biggest difference to your confidence?

"Definitely getting out and meeting clients, attending audits and speaking directly with people. My communication skills have developed so much and that's made a huge difference to my confidence."

🔍 What do you enjoy most about your work?

"External audits! I enjoy the logic behind them and understanding how different businesses operate. There's always a reason behind what we do and I really enjoy getting into the detail."

🤝 What's important when building great client relationships?

"Listening and understanding things from the client's perspective. Every business is different, so it's important to build trust and not take a one-size-fits-all approach."

🌱 And what do you enjoy about helping newer colleagues?

"That moment when something clicks for someone you've been helping! There's a real sense of satisfaction in seeing people develop and achieving things together as a team."

⚽ Away from the office?

- Harvey plays football for Bideford, is a big Tottenham Hotspur fan and has recently taken up golf! ⛳
- His ideal Devon weekend? A trip to the beach, particularly Bantham or somewhere in the South Hams. 🏖️
- And...if Harvey takes control of the office party playlist, expect a mix of Oasis, Britpop and country music! 🎶

It's great to see Harvey continuing to develop, taking on new responsibilities and sharing his knowledge with others across the team.

Thanks for sharing a little more about yourself, Harvey! 💙

We’re looking for a Business Services Manager or Assistant Manager to join the growing team at Griffin💡

This is a great opportunity for someone already working within Business Services who is ready for their next step - whether that means moving into management for the first time or continuing to develop at manager level.

You’ll have experience working within Business Services, with exposure to areas including accounts, corporation tax and personal tax and an understanding of the needs of owner-managed businesses and individuals.

At Griffin, we’re proud to be a locally owned, independent accountancy firm with strong accountancy foundations, an entrepreneurial outlook and a genuine focus on putting people - both clients and colleagues - at the heart of what we do.

We’re growing, ambitious and proud of the culture we continue to build.

As a recently certified B Corp, we believe in giving people the opportunity to develop, take responsibility and build a career where they feel trusted, supported and able to make a real contribution. 🌱

You’ll be joining a forward-thinking team with the opportunity to work closely with clients, develop your experience and play an important part in Griffin’s continued growth.

There’s also a strong benefits package, with additional benefits available depending on the level of the role.

If you’re working in Business Services and feel ready for your next career step, we’d love to hear from you.

📊 Business owners and leaders need to understand what is really happening behind their numbers.

Not just what happened last year or last quarter, but what is happening in the business now, what the numbers are telling them and what they might need to do next.

That’s why good management information is so important.

We’re increasingly delivering Xero training for clients, businesses and individuals, helping them get more from the cloud-based accounting platform and build greater confidence in using it.

But it goes much further than simply learning how to use the software.

It’s about making sure financial systems are set up effectively, the right information is being captured and businesses can turn their numbers into meaningful insight.

Stronger management information can help you:

💡 Make better-informed decisions
🔎 Spot trends, opportunities and potential challenges earlier
📈 Plan ahead with greater confidence
📊 Understand performance more clearly
👥 Build the knowledge and capability of your finance team

Xero is a great tool, but the real value comes from understanding and using the information behind it.

For us, accountancy is about far more than reporting historic numbers. It’s about being alongside our clients, helping them understand their business better and giving them the information and confidence to make good decisions about what comes next.

💬 If you’re already using Xero but feel you could be getting more from it, or you want better management information to help you understand your business, have a conversation with us...

We’d be happy to help!

🌱 What does an apprenticeship really look like once you are well into the journey?

For Amber, Imogen and Christian, it means combining professional study with meaningful client work, growing responsibility and the confidence to take greater ownership...

🏫 Amber has been involved in academy audits, developed her client communication and become more confident making decisions. Being recognised as Employee of the Month was a particularly proud moment in her journey.

📞 Imogen has grown in confidence when communicating professionally with clients, especially over the telephone. She has always felt able to ask questions and is continuing to build her knowledge, with a particular interest in taxation for the future.

🤝 Christian has valued the hands-on nature of the role and the trust he has been given to take responsibility for his own work. He also highlighted how colleagues always make time to help - many having completed apprenticeships themselves and understanding the challenges involved.

✨ Their experiences are different, but the common themes are clear: real responsibility, constructive support and continuous development.

💼 For our clients, that matters. Investing in people helps Griffin build a knowledgeable, confident and committed team that understands the importance of communication, good judgement and high-quality work.

👏 We are proud of the progress Amber, Imogen and Christian continue to make - and excited to see where their journeys take them next.

Taking time to celebrate the wins together🥂

Last week the Griffin team headed to Samuel Jones on Exeter Quay for a lovely evening together.

The occasion was Jared becoming a fully qualified Chartered Accountant - a fantastic achievement and definitely one worth celebrating! 👏

For us, though, evenings like this are also about taking time to come together as a team.

We’re incredibly proud of the people and culture we have at Griffin. Supporting each other, recognising achievements and enjoying the moments that matter along the way are all an important part of that.

Because when someone in the team succeeds, it’s lovely to be able to celebrate it together.

Good food, great company and a very well-deserved celebration. 💙

A thought-provoking morning at Exeter City Conversations yesterday! 💭

Misty Gill and Laura Waycott had a brilliant morning at Exeter Chamber latest City Conversations event, hearing from a great mix of speakers on some of the opportunities enges facing our city, businesses and communities.

⭐ Helen Wylde-Archibald shared an update on the Chamber’s work supporting businesses and building resilience through challenging economic times.

⭐ Bindu Arjoon, Chief Executive of Exeter City Council, gave an insightful update on Local Government Reorganisation and the priorities for Exeter moving forward.

⭐ Danny harris from Exeter City Community Trust shared more about the fantastic work taking place across our communities and the exciting plans for the King George V playing fields.

A particular takeaway for us came from Henry Sanford of AB Brand & Marketing, who challenged everyone to think about the environmental impact of marketing - including some surprising insights into the resources behind the content we consume and create every day 🌱

As a recently certified B Corp, that really resonated with us. Sustainability isn’t only about the obvious things - it’s about continuing to question the impact of the everyday decisions we make across all areas of the business, including how we market and communicate💡

Plenty to think about and take back to the Griffin team....

Thank you to Exeter Chamber, all of the speakers and Exeter City Football Club for hosting - and the bacon sandwiches were pretty good too! 😊

As we focus on our amazing Griffin apprentices, we couldn’t be prouder of Jared Mills, who joined us as an apprentice six years ago and is now a Chartered Accountant. 🎓👏

University wasn’t the route Jared wanted to take. An apprenticeship gave him a credible alternative - the opportunity to earn while learning, gain professional qualifications and build real-world experience from the very beginning.

Fast forward six years and he now manages his own client portfolio and is beginning to guide and support others coming through behind him.

“I know I have grown as a person and now as a leader. It has changed my life.”

For us, that’s what investing in apprenticeships is all about - developing talented people for the long term, building the skills and experience our clients rely on and creating a pathway for those who don’t see university as the right option for them.

Recruit. Learn. Develop. Progress. Lead. Mentor. Repeat. 🔄

Most of us can probably think of someone who believed in us, backed us or gave us an opportunity at an important point in our career.

We want to be that for others.

Jared’s advice to those following behind him is simple:

“Believe in yourself, back yourself and keep putting in the work.”

Perhaps his reflection on the last six years says it best:

“My apprenticeship gave me confidence, a meaningful career and a sense of purpose. I feel like I have found my why.”

For our people. For our clients. For the next generation of talented professionals. 💚

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday for the Griffin Charity Seminar! 💚

A special thank you to our brilliant speakers, Laura Waycott, Michael Jarrold, Rowan Truscott, Peter Last and James Court, for sharing such informative, practical and engaging talks💡

To everyone who attended - thank you for your fantastic engagement and the interactive Q&A and conversations around each subject. It really added to the morning.

The charity sector is something we care deeply about at Griffin - and events like this are an important part of our commitment to supporting the incredible organisations and people who make such a difference across our communities.

Thank you also to RBC Brewin Dolphin for partnering with us to make the event possible.

A really positive morning of learning, sharing and connecting. 💚
