Last week was one of those pinch me moments , standing in front of an audience at the University of Exeter Employment Awards as my business Hamilton Pullen Financial Planning was sponsoring the Community Award . This was my fourth year but, this one felt different.

In my speech, I spoke about the South African philosophy of Ubuntu which ultimately means “I am because we are.”

It is the belief that our lives are shaped by the people around us, that kindness matters, and that none of us succeed alone.

It felt different not only because I prayed so hard I wouldn’t stutter as I tend to do when nervous and He listened.. not one bit of stuttering 👏But mainly due to me meeting the winner, Sara Abengro. Sara shared that my speech had resonated so much with her, because she too had moved to the UK from another country , Italy . And, she too understood what it feels like to build a new life, find your place, and create a sense of belonging.

All our journeys may begin in different places, many of our experiences are shared. We all need encouragement. We all need connection. We all need community.

Sara embodies everything this award stands for, and it was an honour to recognise her contributions.

Congratulations again to Sara and all the nominees who are making a positive difference in the lives of others.

Because in the end, success isn’t only measured by what we achieve. It’s measured by the impact we have on the people around us.

Ubuntu. I am because we are.

The last three weeks have honestly been some of the darkest our family has ever faced.

When someone so strong, independent, and always is “the rock” of the family is suddenly fighting for their life in hospital, everything just stops. Life stood still for a while. Nothing else seemed important.

My dad has now been home from hospital for four days and is making wonderful progress. Over the weekend we have been sitting in the sun together, enjoying the quiet moments that once felt so ordinary but now mean absolutely everything. I even got trusted with the clippers to cut his hair.. very brave Popi 😊, which definitely gave us all a much needed chuckle .

Over the past few weeks I can definitely see that life is not just about material things, titles, or achievements. It’s about Family, Health , Faith, Love AND absolutely about the people who sit beside you when you have nothing left to give.

To the incredible people who stood beside me and my family during this time , you know who you are. Thank you. Thank you for your constant prayers, messages, support, encouragement, and simply being there even when I just didn’t have the energy to reply
“Walk with the wise and become wise.” – Proverbs 13:20

Right now, I’m just grateful. Grateful Dad is home. Grateful for every small step forward. And grateful for the people God placed around us when we needed them most

Ahh, this makes my heart so happy! 😊 Just seen this review from my client on my VouchedFor page.

Financial planning can feel overwhelming at times, so being able to simplify things and be there when it matters most is something I truly care about.

Four years ago, I said yes to sponsoring the University of Exeter Employment Awards… and I had no idea how much it would come to mean to me.

Next month marks my fourth year as a sponsor, and I feel incredibly proud to once again support such a special event, especially because I am sponsoring the Community Award.

When I moved to the UK from South Africa five years ago, I was stepping into something completely new. What I didn’t expect was just how much the Exeter community would shape both my personal life and my business. The support, the connections, the sense of belonging… it is something that I will never take for granted.

Back home, the word Community means Ubuntu, which translates to “I am because we are.” That belief has stayed with me and has become a core part of how I build my business today. Because success is never just about one person it is about the people around us, the communities we are part of, and the impact we have on others.

That’s why this award means so much to me. It recognises those who go beyond themselves to support others, create opportunities, and truly make a difference.

Am really looking forward to being part of such an inspiring day and celebrating the incredible individuals who embody what community truly means.

The less you leave to chance, the more you leave behind, don't you think?
When I sit with clients, and we talk about tax planning or estate planning, it’s rarely just about numbers. It’s mostly always about family.

Because actually it's about wanting to know that the life you have built, the long hours, the sacrifices, and all those careful decisions will definitely benefit the people you love.

Don't you often think about how much of life we can’t control? Let's change it to how much we CAN. And, it starts with choosing to be intentional.

A little time spent planning today, reviewing allowances, structuring investments properly, and checking beneficiary nominations can mean more of your legacy will reach the right hands tomorrow. And, no, not because we are trying to avoid something. But because we care. Remember, legacy is not just about money. It’s about:

Thoughtfulness. Responsibility and Love

Great sesh today on Personal Branding and how to show up authentically in business, with James Court and his BYB Academy.

And to top it off… we even had a visit from the Easter Bunny🐣

Today I had the pleasure of attending “Wealth Reimagined” at Winslade Park , the brainchild of the incredible Isabel Knight with Samantha Townsend DipPFS CII Cert

Hearing from so many inspiring women about their journeys in sport and business was honestly so powerful. What was so evident in the room was the strength , the grit and the determination of the women who are genuinely there to support, uplift and empower one another.

Feeling so inspired, thank you Isabel Knight , thankyou Heather McKenzie from CWC Solicitors , RGB Recruitment Ltd and Bishop Fleming Chartered Accountants

Do you ever say or think that 'a little work, a lot of life ' or ' a LOT of work, a LITTLE of life? '. Because just this week, I sat down with a client of mine who is in her early 50s. She's very successful and juggles work, family, ageing parents, and all that life brings her.

On the face of it, she is doing well as her salary is great, she is building her pension pot, and her ISAs are in place. But the thing is, as we talked, something within her definitely shifted. She opened up to me quite rightly and said, “I don’t want to be doing this at this pace forever.”

What she was really saying was that her goals were not about her making more money. It was that she wanted more time. In fact, it was about space. Space to reduce her hours in a few years. Space to travel without feeling guilty. Space to be present and properly present with the people who matter most to her, her family.

In the end, what we did was we :
🌱Worked through her numbers together.
🌱We reviewed her tax position.
🌱Made better use of allowances.
🌱Adjusted contributions.
🌱Structured things more efficiently.

Honestly, nothing dramatic. No risky decisions. Just thoughtful planning. And when the projections came back, she realised something powerful…
She had options as she could afford to slow down earlier than she thought.

That’s what planning is really about. And THIS is why I love what I do

If you’ve ever wondered whether you could step back sooner, breathe a little easier, or design your life differently, it might be that time that you look to having those intentional conversations.

Who says a financial planner can’t assemble a chair?

New chairs arrived for the office … and apparently assembling flat-pack furniture is now part of the job description too.

Financial planning by day, furniture assembly by lunch break.

Next… the table 😳😂

Turns out problem solving isn’t just for finances.

You know what they say about the early bird…yes, of course you do! If you know me well, it's certainly NOT about the alarm clock going off for a 5 am start.

Every March, I have conversations with my clients and prospects, and more and more often, they reply with “I wish I’d done more earlier.”

The truth is, earlier doesn’t have to mean years ago. It can simply mean now. Or as we South Africans say now-now.

Being consistent and intentional with regular habits, no matter how small, builds great financial plans year after year.

An example of this is using your ISA allowance, which is one of those simple but powerful habits. It doesn’t feel all that exciting, and it definitely does not make the front page of the papers. But investing up to £20,000 tax-efficiently each year can make a remarkable difference over time.

So.. yes, start those conversations now now 😀
