Received a Simple Assessment letter from HMRC?

HMRC are currently sending out Simple Assessment (PA302) letters for the 2025/26 tax year, including to many pensioners.

These letters are issued where HMRC believes tax is due but it cannot be collected automatically, for example, on savings interest, dividends, pension income or other untaxed income.

If you receive one, don’t ignore it. Check the figures carefully against your own records and query anything that does not look right before paying.

Payment is normally due by 31 January 2027, unless a different date is shown on the letter.

📅 Self Assessment payment reminder

The second payment on account for the 2025/26 tax year is due to HMRC by 31 July 2026.

Please make sure your payment is made on time to avoid interest and possible late-payment penalties.

If you are unable to pay the full amount, do not ignore it. You may be able to arrange a Time to Pay payment plan through your HMRC online account, or contact HMRC on 0300 200 3310 to discuss your options. You should contact HMRC before 31 July.

31st March may be your company or trade year end, if so, to help out your accountant you should consider calculating the following figures at the close of business today:

Stock - valued at the lower of cost and net realisable value.
Creditors - who you owe money to.
Debtors - who owes you money.
