Most accounting stress in small businesses comes from leaving everything until it becomes urgent!

Receipts pile up, invoices get missed, cash flow becomes unclear.
And suddenly the numbers feel overwhelming.

The solution is not doing more accounting.
It is creating simple routines!

A useful exercise for any business owner...

Stop focusing on the amount of money you want to earn.
Instead, focus on the life you want to build.

What would financial stability allow you to do?

Would it mean:
• more time with family?
• employing support?
• less stress?
• investing in your health?
• creating experiences?
• having breathing space?

Money is rarely emotional on its own.
What it represents is emotional.

When you connect financial goals to meaningful outcomes, money conversations often become far easier.

Because it stops being about making money.
And starts being about creating a better quality of life.

Checking your accounts daily is not about watching every penny with fear.

It is about building familiarity with your business finances.

The more often you look at your numbers, the less emotionally charged they become.

You stop reacting dramatically to normal fluctuations.
You become more strategic.

It is similar to stepping on the scales regularly.

People who avoid it often fear what they might see.
But avoiding information rarely improves the outcome.

Clarity gives you options.
Avoidance removes them.

Five minutes each morning can completely change how connected you feel to your business that day and prompt you to be active on what needs to be done with regards to chasing leads, invoicing or following up on overdue accounts.

Money is the root of all evil

Many of us grew up hearing phrases like that or
“Money doesn’t grow on trees.”
“Rich people are selfish.”
“You can’t have everything.”

Those beliefs do not disappear just because you start a business.

They often show up in subtle ways:
• undercharging
• avoiding sales
• fear of visibility
• discomfort around success
• reluctance to set ambitious goals

😀 A calmer nervous system

Many business owners secretly carry guilt around wanting financial success because they associate money with greed.

But money simply amplifies what is already there.

In the hands of good people, it often creates good outcomes.

A profitable business can mean:
• employing people fairly
• supporting local suppliers
• helping clients properly
• creating stability at home

There is nothing wrong with wanting that.

Some business owners treat money conversations as something to avoid

until there's a problem!

By then, the pressure is already high.

Healthy businesses build regular financial awareness into daily operations.

Knowing your numbers means you can:
• make better decisions
• plan ahead
• negotiate confidently
• invest wisely
• reduce panic

Financial visibility is not just about profit. It affects confidence too!

One of the most powerful habits in business

is setting financial targets before you 'feel ready.'

Not vague goals but specific numbers.

👉 Monthly revenue.
👉 Profit margins.
👉 Savings buffers.
👉 Personal salary targets.

Without targets, it becomes difficult to measure progress objectively.

You either feel like you are failing or assume everything is fine.
Neither is particularly useful.

Targets create focus.

They help you ask better questions:
• What needs to change?
• What is actually profitable?
• Which services are draining time?
• Where are clients coming from?

A business without financial targets often drifts.
A business with clear targets tends to make clearer decisions.

What kind of targets (not just financial) do you set in your business?

Money is not the goal.

What money allows you to do is the goal!

For some business owners, that means:

• paying themselves consistently
• taking pressure off the household
• employing a team member
• reducing working hours
• funding better systems
• taking a proper holiday
• sleeping better at night

👉Money is simply a tool.

The problem is that many people were raised to see money as selfish, greedy, or something to feel guilty about wanting but building a profitable business is not immoral.

A healthy business supports families, creates opportunities, reduces stress, and gives people choices.

Perhaps the question is not “Do I want more money?”

Perhaps it is: “What do I want money to make possible?”

🤔 Is or has money a block for you? How dd you reframe it?

🤔 One of the biggest mindset shifts I see in successful business owners is that they stop seeing money as 'money'.

They start seeing it as options.

An extra £2,000 profit each month might mean:
• hiring support
• reducing late nights
• replacing old equipment
• paying themselves consistently
• finally taking a holiday without checking emails constantly

As accountants, we often sit in meetings where business owners apologise for wanting to earn more.

Almost as though profit is something to feel guilty about.

But healthy profits allow businesses to become stable. —> Stable businesses employ people.
—> Support families. —> Invest back into growth.

Money itself is neutral. It’s simply a tool that gives you more choice.

The interesting conversation is never “How much money do you want?”
It’s usually “What would that money change for you?”

That answer is nearly always emotional rather than material.

Where is your business at when it comes to money?

I have clients who dread opening their banking app.

Not because the business is failing. But because they are scared of what they 'might' see.

So they avoided it. For weeks sometimes.

The strange thing is, once we sit down and actually reviewed the numbers together, things are nowhere near as bad as they’d imagined. In fact, a few small changes can solve most of the pressure much earlier.

And this is something I see a lot as an accountant.

Business owners often think checking their accounts daily will make them anxious but usually it does the opposite. It removes uncertainty. You stop guessing and catastrophising. Instead you start making decisions based on facts instead of feelings.

I’m not suggesting obsessing over every transaction but spending five minutes each morning checking:

• cash in the bank
• outstanding invoices
• upcoming payments
• sales coming in

…creates awareness —> which creates control.

Because most financial stress in business comes from surprises.

and daily visibility reduces surprises.
