Business rates remain a growing concern for UK businesses

According to recent research from the British Chambers of Commerce, concern over business rates has reached its highest level since records began in 2017.

For many businesses, rising rates are adding to cost pressures, impacting pricing decisions and, in some cases, delaying plans for growth and expansion.

While some sectors have seen relief measures introduced, calls are growing for wider reform of the business rates system to better support businesses across the UK.

We'll be keeping a close eye on any developments and what they could mean for business owners. We'd love to hear your thoughts.

The government has confirmed plans to introduce stronger legislation aimed at tackling late payments to small businesses.

Proposals include:
✅ Maximum payment terms of 60 days
✅ Mandatory interest on overdue invoices at 8% above the Bank of England base rate

For many SMEs, cash flow is one of the biggest challenges they face, and late payments can have a significant impact on growth, investment and day-to-day operations.

While the new rules are still to be introduced, they represent a positive step towards improving payment practices and supporting smaller businesses across the UK.

We'd love to hear if this is going to have a positive impact on your business.

Being busier than ever but feeling like there's no money is a common frustrations we hear from business owners.

The reality is that being busy doesn't always mean being profitable.

You could be:
• Waiting on customer payments
• Taking on low-margin work
• Facing rising overheads
• Underpricing your services
• Growing faster than your cash flow can support

That's why looking beyond turnover is so important. Understanding your profit margins, cash flow and business costs can reveal what's really happening behind the scenes.

If you're working harder than ever but not seeing the financial rewards, it may be time to take a closer look at the numbers.

Could your cash flow be trying to tell you something?

Many businesses don't run into trouble because they're unprofitable - they run into trouble because cash flow isn't being monitored closely enough.

If any of these signs sound familiar, it may be time to take a closer look at what's coming in, what's going out, and what's around the corner.

The good news? Most cash flow issues can be identified and addressed before they become major problems.

Understanding your numbers, forecasting ahead and having the right systems in place can help you stay in control and make better business decisions.

How healthy is your cash flow right now?

At first glance, the answer seems obvious... more customers, right?

Not always.

More customers can mean more sales, but it can also mean higher costs, more admin, increased staffing and tighter margins.

Sometimes the biggest gains come from improving profitability, increasing efficiency, reviewing pricing or focusing on your most valuable clients.

A business with fewer customers and stronger profits is often in a healthier position than one that's busy but struggling to generate a return.

If you had to choose just one, which would it be?

Do you know your most profitable service?

Most business owners can tell you their biggest seller.

Far fewer can tell you which product or service actually makes them the most profit.

Turnover is important, but profit is what fuels growth, strengthens cash flow and supports future investment.

If you're spending time promoting lower-margin services while overlooking your most profitable offerings, you could be missing a valuable opportunity.

Understanding your numbers doesn't just help at year-end, it helps you make better decisions every day.

As summer arrives, Eastbourne starts to come alive. Our seafront is busier and businesses across the area begin preparing for what can be one of the busiest seasons of the year.

It's also the perfect time for a financial check-in (and to keep your eye on the ball).

We're almost halfway through 2026, so ask yourself:

✓ Are you on track to meet your goals?
✓ Do you know your current profit position?
✓ Is your cash flow healthy?
✓ Are there opportunities to improve before the second half of the year?

A small review now could make a big difference by December.

Here's to a sunny, successful June for businesses in Eastbourne and beyond. If you need our help, give us a call!

⚠️ Scam Alert: Stay vigilant

HMRC is warning pensioners to be extra cautious as Winter Fuel Payment recoveries begin.

Scammers often use fake emails, texts, letters and phone calls pretending to be HMRC in an attempt to steal personal information or money.

For many people, any repayment will simply be handled through a PAYE tax code adjustment, meaning there is often no need to contact HMRC directly.

If something doesn’t feel right, pause before clicking links or sharing details. When in doubt, check directly through official HMRC channels.
