Could more pensioners soon be paying tax on their State Pension?

It’s something that has been coming up a lot recently, especially with frozen tax thresholds and the State Pension continuing to rise.

Slowly but surely, more retirees are being pulled into income tax without really doing anything differently.

It’s not a new tax being introduced. It’s what’s known as “fiscal drag”, where allowances stay the same but incomes creep up over time.

I’ve written a short blog breaking this down in a simple way and looking at what it could mean for retirement planning going forward. If it’s something you’ve been wondering about, it might be worth a quick read.

Is the UK’s tax burden starting to hit a tipping point?

It’s something that caught my attention in the latest OBR commentary — not just that tax levels are rising, but how they’re rising.

A lot of it isn’t coming from big headline tax rises, but from quieter changes like frozen thresholds and fiscal drag. Over time, that slowly pulls more people into higher tax bands without anything obvious changing.

What’s interesting is the OBR’s warning that this could start to influence behaviour — things like working patterns, pay expectations and even long-term growth.

I’ve pulled together a short blog looking at what’s happening, why it matters, and what it could mean going forward.

Just when it felt like things might be easing… the weekly shop tells a different story.

Grocery inflation has crept up again and it’s one of those things you don’t need a report to notice - you see it every time you’re at the checkout.

A few extra pounds here and there might not sound like much on paper, but over a week or a month, it adds up. And for many households, it’s a reminder that the cost-of-living pressure hasn’t fully gone away.

What’s interesting is what’s sitting behind it - energy costs, global tensions, seasonal demand - all feeding back into everyday prices. And if that continues, it could mean the wider sense of financial relief takes longer to arrive.

I’ve shared a few thoughts on what this could mean in practice and why grocery inflation still matters so much for how the economy actually feels.

You’d think lower mortgage rates would bring buyers back into the market… but that’s not quite what’s happening.

UK mortgage approvals have fallen again, and it’s less about affordability and more about confidence. After months of policy noise, budget speculation, and general uncertainty, a lot of buyers are still sitting on their hands.

Even with rates improving, committing to a mortgage is a big step, and if people aren’t sure what’s coming next, they tend to wait.

It’s an interesting reminder that the housing market isn’t just driven by numbers. Confidence, timing, and sentiment all play a huge role in whether people actually move forward.

I’ve put together a few thoughts on what’s going on and what it might mean over the next few months if you’re keeping an eye on things.

So, the government says families could be £1,000 better off. Sounds simple, right?

In reality, it’s anything but. Not everyone benefits in the same way. Renters won’t feel mortgage cuts. Fixed-rate homeowners see relief only when they refinance. Bills, taxes, and childcare costs can all eat into that headline number.

UK household finances don’t improve overnight - it’s a slow, patchy process. I’ve shared my take on how this could play out in everyday life, what families might actually notice, and why the £1,000 figure can sometimes be more Westminster arithmetic than lived experience.

If you’re curious about how it could affect your household, have a read of my latest blog.

“Keep things stable” sounds like the safe strategy…

But what happens when the world isn’t?

With UK economy stability at the heart of the Spring Statement, the government is betting on consistency. Meanwhile, markets are navigating rising uncertainty, energy shocks and inflation risks.

There’s a lot beneath the surface.

I’ve shared a few thoughts on what this could mean for the UK economy and investors in my latest blog.

Quick question, how retirement-ready do you feel right now?

I’ve been reading the latest Scottish Widows report on retirement readiness and some of the findings really stood out. Many people are doing just enough to get by in retirement, while a growing number may struggle to meet even basic needs, often without realising it.

What struck me most is how different retirement readiness looks depending on your age, income and whether you’re employed or self-employed.

I’ve shared a short breakdown of the key takeaways in my latest blog, along with why it’s worth checking in on your own position sooner rather than later.

Unused pensions and death benefits could soon form part of your inheritance tax bill.

Following proposals announced in the Autumn Budget 2024, unused pension funds and certain death benefits may be included in estate values for IHT purposes from April 2027.

While the changes aren’t final yet, they could have a meaningful impact on established estate and pension plans — particularly for those who’ve built pensions with wealth transfer in mind.

In our latest blog, we explain:

🔹What’s been proposed
🔹The expected timeline
🔹Why it’s worth reviewing arrangements now (without rushing into changes)

💭 Confident your wealth is growing… but is your retirement planning keeping pace?

New research suggests many high-net-worth individuals feel optimistic about their financial future, yet don’t have fully formed retirement or succession plans in place.

With long-term wealth, family goals and future planning all closely linked, it’s a topic worth taking a closer look at.

I’ve shared some key insights in our latest blog, including what the research reveals and why planning earlier can make a real difference.
