Neligan Financial Enabling people working in and around Exeter plan for and live a successful retirement. To help them live a successful retirement.

By helping you to be clear on what is most important to you whilst providing clarity about your financial future. I established Neligan Financial to help my clients plan for the next stage of their lives. Experiences and happy memories are priceless, and preparing you financially to make these happen is just one way I can help you retire successfully. The focus is always on you and your unique si

tuation. By taking time to REALLY listen to you together, we can uncover what is most important to you so that we can put in place the most appropriate strategy for your money. Having grown up in Exeter, I left home at 18 to teach in a school in Cape Town, South Africa, attend Aston University and then start my financial services career with Standard Life in London and latterly Surrey. By 2008 I saw an opportuntity to use my knowledge and skills to add real value to people's lives and joined Informed Choice Ltd, a small but highly professional family run financial planning firm in Cranleigh, Surrey. At Informed Choice I learnt how financial planning can make a positive contribution to helping people realise their hopes and dreams whilst minimising the risks that can de-rail retirement plans. All that time Devon remained firmly in my heart and 20 years later I returned with my wife, Carol, and son, Edward, and set up Neligan Financial Ltd. The objective of the business is to help the people of Exeter & East Devon to live a life of real wealth and purpose so that I can provide the same for my family.

The global stock markets are the most efficient way to get your money working harder without you having to.

Like the albatross wandering the oceans of the world using just the energy of the wind, by investing your money around the world it can use the 'energy' of the global stock markets to grow overtime without you using your own energy.

Money is one of the main reasons why relationships fall apart. But it doesn't have to be.

According to a 2018 poll by law firm Slater and Gordon:
- 21% of people blamed money worries on their partner.
- 43% accuse their partner of overspending.
- 16% had argued about money in the last week, 23% in the past fortnight.

Our behaviours around money are linked to our beliefs about it. We form these beliefs through our experiences during childhood.

What seems rational to us might be completely irrational to our partners because their childhood experiences, and therefore beliefs have led to different behaviours.

By understanding where your and your partner's beliefs have stemmed from can lead to more positive conversations and avoid relationships falling apart.

If you find yourself fighting with your partner about money get in touch to see how a coaching conversation could improve things for you.

Why is your money important to you?

Money is a highly emotive subjective, we attach hopes, fears and beliefs to it. These are some of the reasons why money is important to them.

A major benefit of a pension is tax relief but to a lot of people that’s just meaningless jargon. Don’t miss the chance to get money from the HMRC, they take enough from us after all.

We all have beliefs about money. We might even tell ourselves that they are positive but often there is a downside to them too.

Take for example someone who likes to give money away. On the face of it that’s a good thing but there may be an underlying belief that they aren’t deserving of it. If they feel undeserving of money they may also not be paid what they deserve.

Or are you, like me, a person who prefers to plan for the future. Focussing too much on future financial freedom can mean missing out on experiences now which can lead to a feeling of regret later on.

There is no ‘best’ belief, it’s all about balance. But then, isn’t everything?

If you recognise yourself in any of these beliefs and would like to discuss it please do contact me.

When you know where you want to get to in your career or life staying the course is easier than when you are directionless.

We can’t avoid the headwinds, the setbacks and disappointments but they are easier to bare when there is a reason to what we are doing.

Our money is a tool to support us on that journey. It can act as a foundation to give us the freedom to change tack. It can give us breathing space when unfortunate events transpire. It can be working alongside us ready for when we call it a day.

January can be such a depressing month; the weather is wet and cold, Christmas feels long gone but summer still way off.

At times like this I fantasize about jumping on a plane somewhere warm. Probably back to South Africa or maybe the Maldives.

If you have a pension or Share ISA your money is probably in an investment fund. It may be that you have not knowingly selected one but it will be invested in a fund nonetheless.

Being in an appropriate investment fund is important because it determines how much growth and investment risk you are exposed to.

Too much risk too near to retirement and it may reduce the pot available to you without sufficient time for it to recover.

Too little risk while you are still working and contributing means you are missing out on potentially higher returns and therefore will potentially have a smaller pot to live off in retirement.
