10p mileage allowance increase

The government has announced a 10p increase to the amount of tax relief drivers can claim when they use their own cars for business journeys. What's the full story?

The mileage allowance has been set at 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles since 6 April 2011. Trade unions have been campaigning for an uplift, and today, a long overdue increase has been confirmed. The mileage allowance has been increased by a modest 10p per mile for the first 10,000 miles, bringing it to 55p per mile, with all other rates remaining static.

The increased rate is also being backdated to 6 April 2026. Where an employer reimburses an employee for the cost of using their own car for business journeys, the mileage allowance sets the amount that can be reimbursed tax-free. Whereas if an employer either does not reimburse employees, or reimburses them at a lower rate, then tax relief on the difference can be claimed.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves set out tax-raising measures worth up to £26 billion in the Autumn Budget on 26 November 2025.

The increases will be achieved through a range of measures, including extending the freeze on Income Tax thresholds for a further three years.

Tax increases
In addition to maintaining Income Tax thresholds, taxes on property, dividend and saving income will be increased.
The Budget also announced employee and employer National Insurance contributions (NICs) on salary sacrifice pension contributions above £2,000 a year and introduced a tax on homes valued at £2 million or more.

The Chancellor should use her Autumn Budget to make off-payroll working rules 'fairer and more effective', according to the Association of Independent Professionals and the Self-Employed (IPSE).
