Most people know because of the chocolate.

What most people don’t know is that it all started with a man who believed people deserved to be treated properly.

Back in 1824, John Cadbury opened a small shop in Birmingham selling drinking chocolate, tea, and coffee.

As the business grew, he became known for something that had nothing to do with chocolate.

He invested in his people. That belief ran through everything. As the business grew, they created Bournville. It had real homes, green spaces, a community built around the idea that work should support a good life, not replace one.

The business grew. Two generations later, the family created what we now know as Dairy Milk. New products followed. The family kept building.

But through all of it, something stayed remarkably consistent.

The way they did things. The values. The feeling people associated with the brand.

By the time the gorilla advert arrived, Cadbury wasn’t just selling chocolate. It had become part of people’s lives. Birthdays. Christmas. Easter. Childhood memories.

That famous purple became recognisable long before you ever saw the logo.

Two hundred years later, Cadbury is one of the most recognisable brands in the world.

Not bad for a business that started with one man, a small shop, and a belief that people matter.

To be clear - this isn’t tax advice and it won’t be right for everyone. Always check with your accountant or tax advisor first. But here’s how a lot of people do it.

So you’re self employed. You graft. You invoice. You pay your tax. You cry a little. Repeat.

But some people have figured out a different way to pay themselves - and no, it’s not dodgy, it’s just limited.

When you go limited the company earns the money instead of you. You pay yourself a small salary, just enough to keep HMRC happy, and then top it up with dividends. Which is basically just a fancy word for “your share of the profits.”

Dividends are taxed differently to income. For a lot of people that means actually keeping more of what they earn.

Wild concept, we know.

But, it’s not for everyone - there’s more admin and it depends on your situation. But for a lot of sole traders there comes a point where it just starts making sense.

You finish a job. You’re knackered. Last thing you want to do is sit down and write an invoice.

So you don’t. You’ll do it later… and we all know how that ends.

If you’re still doing it all manually, there’s a better way - and once you try it you’ll wonder what took you so long.

You pull your phone out, log the work on the spot, and the software just... does the invoice. Sends it too if you want. That’s it. You’re done before you’ve even got your seatbelt on.

And look - the taxman is catching up with everyone anyway. Making Tax Digital is already here for a lot of sole traders and e-invoicing becomes a legal requirement in 2029. It’s all heading the same direction.

If you spend half your life driving between jobs, sites, clients or suppliers, you need to know this.

For the first time in around 15 years, the approved mileage allowance for the first 10,000 business miles is increasing from 45p to 55p per mile.

The change was announced today by Chancellor Rachel Reeves and will be backdated to April 2026.

For a lot of our clients, especially those in construction, trades, consultancy and mobile services, mileage is a genuine business cost.

Fuel, insurance, tyres, servicing, repairs… it all adds up fast.

Look… we get it. It happens.

You buy lunch on the business card. Pay for software on your personal account. Accidentally mix the two when you’re busy trying to run a business and survive the week.

Nobody’s telling you off.

But if it starts becoming a habit, it creates problems far bigger than just giving your accountant a headache.

It becomes harder to track what your business is really spending.

Harder to understand profit properly.
Harder to spot cash flow issues early.
Harder to keep clean records if HMRC ever come asking questions.

Good financial decisions come from clear information. Once everything gets blurred together, that clarity disappears very quickly.

So yes, your accountant would appreciate it. But honestly? Your future self will too.

Last week, Jaime officially passed her AAT Level 3 qualification and now has AATQB after her name 🤍

If you’re not in the accounting world, it’s probably hard to understand just how much work goes into something like this.

This isn’t just a case of sitting one little test and getting a certificate at the end of it.

It’s months of studying after work when your brain is already tired. It’s revision on weekends. Pressure before exams. Trying to remember huge amounts of technical information whilst still showing up every day, looking after clients, replying to emails, helping the team, and just… carrying on with normal life at the same time.

What makes us smile is that Jaime has handled the whole thing exactly how she handles everything else. Quietly getting on with it, no fuss, no big song and dance, just hard work, consistency, and determination.

She’s brilliant at what she does, she’s funny in that dry, straight-talking way we all know and love, and we genuinely feel very lucky to have her as part of the team.

We are so, so proud of her.

Some achievements deserve more than a quick “well done” and this is definitely one of them 🤍
