Sunday 25th October is National Pension Tracing Day, a reminder that you might have pension savings from previous jobs that you’ve lost track of over the years.

The good news is that there’s a free government Pension Tracing Service that can help you find the contact details for previous pension providers.

Taking a little time to understand what pensions you have, and where they are, can be a useful first step towards feeling more confident about your retirement plans.

Because good financial planning starts with understanding what you already have.

You have a doctor for your health, an accountant for your business and a solicitor for legal matters.

But when it comes to financial planning, there's sometimes an assumption that it's something you do once, tick off the list and forget about.

That's not how I see it.

Life changes. Your priorities shift. What mattered to you five years ago might look completely different today.

And your financial plan should be able to evolve alongside you.
For me, financial planning isn't about one meeting or one decision. It's about building a relationship, understanding what matters to you and being there as life unfolds.

Because good financial planning isn't just about creating a plan.

When people think about financial planning, they often think about pensions, investments and spreadsheets.

But for me, that's not where the conversation starts.
It starts with you.

Where are you now? What would you like your future to look like? And what's important to you along the way?

Before we talk about numbers, I want to understand your hopes, your concerns and what you're working towards.

Because financial planning isn't simply about what you've got. It's about understanding what you want your money to help you achieve.

And building a plan around the life you want to live.

5 years ago.

The moment in my life when I decided. That's it. I was done doing it everyone else's way, hiding behind the scenes, not able to take the leap.
Women hit an age. A turning point where we drop the pleasing, the saying yes, being put in a corner. For many reasons, I decided I was done.

I quit my role. Gave up any form of income. Started completely from zero. There was no business plan, I just knew I had to do it.

0 income. 0 clients.

I took a huge leap and went with my heart. I turned off the voice of doubt. I wanted to be in control of my destiny.

A quick summary: farmers markets. Presentations to the military. Every form of attempt at social media. Leaflets. Women's presentations (my favourite). Friends and family mentioning my name and sharing my posts. Networking. Workplace presentations. Mentoring.

I have pushed and pushed to get people to understand what I do and to sit with me, to talk about money, to plan for their future, to understand the numbers and share their worries, their wins, their wants.

Somewhere in the middle of all that, I ended up with a little appearance on the Martin Lewis Money Show. Still not entirely sure how, still haven't watched it, still don't like talking about it.

Today, I sit at 5 years, and I am beyond grateful. I know how hard I have worked but I wouldn't be here without the supportive people around me. You all know who you are, clients, friends, family, the team at Slaiyburn Financial Planning.

I have the most amazing clients, many who've become friends, I have also turned clients away, because it has to be right for both of us, this is a journey. I've built a business in a community I love. I've found friendships within my business community who have supported me and will be by my side going forward.

The voice of doubt still turns up every day. I just don't listen to it the way I used to.

I cannot wait for the next 5 years (although I would like them to go just a little bit slower)

Women retire with pensions worth around a third less than men's. I talk about this every year, and I'm not going to stop.

It's not a personal failing — it's the quiet, compounding effect of career breaks, part-time years, and lower average pay, building up in a pension for decades before anyone notices.

Naming it doesn't close the gap on its own. But you can't do anything about a gap you don't know is there.

If Pension Awareness Month does one thing this year, let it be this: find out where you actually stand — whatever that number turns out to be.

"I've got a pension, so I'm sorted" is a sentence I hear a lot.

Having one and knowing what it'll actually give you are two different things — and it's the second part most people haven't got to yet.

If you've moved jobs a few times over the years, there's a good chance there's a pension out there you've lost track of. It's free to find — the government's Pension Tracing Service (gov.uk) exists for exactly this, and it takes minutes.

I'd rather someone found an old pot and it turned out to be nothing, than never looked at all.

Yesterday was Pension Awareness Day. Here's the only three questions that actually matter.

Not "how much have I got." Not even "is it enough."
Where am I? Can I do what I want? What do I need to do to get there?

A pension is just one part of answering those. But it's worth being able to answer them at all — and that starts with actually looking.

I'll be honest — most of the people I sit with haven't looked at their pension in years.

Not because they don't care. Because it's felt like opening a drawer they weren't sure they wanted to see inside — too many unknowns, too many numbers that don't quite make sense at a glance.

So it gets left. Not forever, just for now.

This month, I'm not asking anyone to fix anything. Just to look, when you're ready. That's genuinely where every conversation I have starts.

There’s something I wish more people knew before speaking to a financial adviser…

You never need to be embarrassed about the truth of your finances.

You haven’t started a pension yet? Tell me.
You don’t have any savings? Tell me.
You’ve got debt you’d rather wasn’t there? Tell me.

You’ve been meaning to sort your finances for the last ten years and somehow never quite got around to it? Tell me that too.

There’s no judgement here.

My job isn’t to tell you what you should have done five or ten years ago. It’s to understand where you are now, where you’d like to get to, and help you work out what comes next.

And to do that properly, I need the full picture — not the version you think you should show me.

Financial planning has to start with what’s real.

So bring me the truth. We can work with that.

If your income stopped tomorrow, how long would you be okay for?

It’s not the cheeriest question I’ll ask — but it is an important one.

Most of us have regular outgoings that aren’t going anywhere just because our income suddenly changes. Mortgage or rent, household bills, food, childcare, car payments… life still needs paying for.

That’s one of the reasons an emergency fund should always be in place.

It isn’t there to make you money or achieve some exciting financial goal. It’s simply there to give you a bit of breathing space when life doesn’t go to plan.

How much you need will be different for everyone. Your monthly commitments, whether you’re the only earner in your household, what sick pay you’re entitled to and how secure your income is can all make a difference.

A useful place to start is asking yourself:

If my income stopped tomorrow, what would I need each month to cover the essentials — and how long could I currently manage?

You don’t need to build an emergency fund overnight. Starting small and adding to it regularly can make a real difference.

Because sometimes financial planning isn’t about what you’re building for 20 years from now.

It’s about making sure you’re okay if life throws you a curveball next month.
