I had the pleasure of helping organise the Womens Day Festival in Derby at the Museum of Making as part of the Womens Day Derby team, where I serve as Treasurer.

Seeing so many women come together to share stories, support each other and celebrate the strength of women in our community was truly inspiring. There was such a positive and uplifting atmosphere throughout the day.

Events like this remind me how powerful it is when women support one another and create spaces where everyone feels welcome.

A big thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered and helped make the day such a success.

I feel very grateful to be part of such an incredible community here in Derby.

Ramadan is a special month for Muslims. It is a time for reflection, prayer and thinking about how we can help others.

One of the most important parts of Ramadan is giving Zakat. Zakat means giving 2.5 percent of our eligible wealth each year to support people who may be struggling. It helps provide food, support and dignity to those who need it most.

Many Muslims choose to give their Zakat during Ramadan because it is a time that encourages kindness, generosity and looking after others.

As a business owner and accountant, I also like to remind people that if a company donates to a registered charity, the donation can be deducted from profits before Corporation Tax is calculated.

The real purpose of Zakat is simply to help others and make a positive difference in someone’s life.

My heart is with everyone in Dubai right now, especially families who are feeling worried and unsettled. My son is there and it has been a frightening and uncertain time for us.

I am keeping you all in my prayers and truly hoping things calm down very soon. May everyone be protected and kept safe.

Tax return deadline reminder

The 31 January deadline is coming up and if you are feeling a bit stressed, you are not alone.

If you are doing your tax return yourself, here are a few gentle tips to make it feel more manageable
1. Focus on getting it submitted on time using the best information you have
2. Gather the basics first P60 or P45, P11D, self employed income totals, bank interest, dividends
3. Use your bank statements to help fill any gaps if you cannot find every receipt
4. Keep expenses simple in headings like travel, phone and internet, software, professional fees, training linked to your work
5. If you cannot pay straight away, still submit the return, then speak to HMRC about a payment plan

Feeling shocked by your Self Assessment bill and then seeing another payment due in July, you are not alone.

Here is what is happening in simple terms.

When you do your tax return, HMRC works out what you owe for LAST tax year.

But if your bill is over £1,000, HMRC often also asks for something called Payment on Account.

That is an advance payment towards THIS tax year.

That is why the January bill can feel so high. It can include
1 Your remaining tax for last year
2 Plus the first advance payment for this year

Then the July payment is usually the second advance payment for this year.

So it is not a random extra bill.
It is HMRC spreading next year tax into two smaller payments.

If your income is lower this year, you may be able to reduce the July payment so you do not overpay.
But it needs to be done carefully.

If you want me to explain your bill in plain English, send me a message and I will talk you through it step by step.

Yesterday I spent the morning at the Derby Santa Run supporting Children First Derby.

We had our stall in the park sharing information about the charity and our Christmas Present Appeal. It was lovely to see a sea of red suits and so many families taking part to support Derby and Burton Hospitals Charity and their partners.

I did not run this time but I really enjoyed cheering everyone on and chatting to people who stopped by the stand. A highlight was trying the famous jacket potato from Spud Man which was perfect for a very cold morning.

Thank you to everyone who came over to say hello and for all the kind donations that help us support vulnerable children young people and families.

Attended a really useful Sage event yesterday. It was all about Making Tax Digital at Leicester football ground.

It was a great chance to learn more about how digital record keeping and software can make tax simpler and clearer for small business owners.

I thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon panel discussion. Like many others I was blown away by the AI accountancy software knowledge that Natasha Everard has. It really opened my eyes to what is possible and how much is changing in our industry.

A very big thank you to Sage and the venue team for providing the Arrow Room as a prayer room. I really appreciated having a quiet and comfortable space to pray. It was extra special knowing it is usually used as an executive room for VIP guests.

Feeling very grateful for the learning and for the thoughtful inclusion shown throughout the day.

Today I attended the Children First Derby Festive Smile Luncheon at Morley Hayes as a proud trustee.

It was lovely to sit next to my colleague Jason who is our treasurer as he talked through the Budget in real time and what it may mean for families and for our charity. Even though we were at a charity event we could not miss the live updates on the budget.

Key points from the budget that stood out for me were.
• The two child benefit cap will be removed which should help many low income families and reduce child poverty over time.
• National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage will increase which gives more support to working parents on lower incomes.
• Extra money has been promised for important public services such as the National Health Service and schools which are vital for the children and families we support.
• More of the tax burden will fall on higher earners and very expensive homes which should help to fund this extra support while trying to protect everyday services for families.

It was inspiring to hear from Baasit Siddiqui and to share his passion for improving the lives of children and young people in Derby.

We were also honoured to have the Mayor of Derby Councillor Ajit Atwal with us which shows how strongly the city supports the work of Children First Derby.

A huge thank you to our generous sponsors Smith Partnership Solicitors for their ongoing support and for helping to make events like this possible for Children First Derby.
