Cedar And Co - Making a Positive Difference

Well in some respects we’re no different from any other firm of accountants out there. It’s kind of a given that we all offer the same service. So what does make us different? Well, we don’t sit on the fence. One of the key questions that we find ourselves asking is “If it were my business, what would I do?” so you’ll always get our honest opinion of wh

at actions to take. We go beyond expectations to achieve what our clients really want, whether that be routine or compliance work such as accounts and tax, or the more complicated and unique specialist type work, or providing our comprehensive range of business services and advice.

Jenny attended the Marketing Derby event this morning, here are her thoughts:

"I really enjoyed this mornings Marketing Derby event in conjunction with Derby Book Festival. I thought Ben Aitken was funny, engaging and thought provoking. I wish now I had taken the time to stand in line and get a book signed, maybe next time.

As he spoke I scribbled down something he said...

"Being negative doesn't get anyone anything or anywhere."

How true is that?!? Ben was talking about people putting down the places we live and getting consumed by the negativity. But isn't it true that it is easy to slip into negative when speaking and discussing anything... the place we live, the experiences we have, our work places, and a current "hot" topic of conversation... the weather!! Maybe if we tried to focus more on the positive we might find more joy in everyday life?

I'm glad I had the chance to start my day with a sausage muffin, coffee and positivity."

The weather’s good, it’s a Bank Holiday weekend, and for once the forecast isn’t trying to ruin everyone’s plans, woohoo!

Neil is at Chevin Golf Club today "networking". For business owners, it’s easy to stay switched on all the time. There’s always another email to answer, another problem to sort, or another thing on the list that “can’t wait until Tuesday”.

But taking a proper break every now and then is actually really important. A bit of time away from the business gives you a chance to reset, clear your head, and come back with a bit more energy and perspective.

The reality is, most things can wait a couple of days.

So enjoy the long weekend. Spend time with family and friends, get outside, have a round of golf, a BBQ, a pub garden visit… whatever helps you switch off for a while.

The work will still be there next week. Hopefully with a tan and a better mood attached to it.

Exams season is here, and for many students starting their GCSEs and A Levels, the pressure can feel huge.

It’s important to say this clearly: exams do not define you.

Yes, work hard, revise, prepare, and give it your best shot. But don’t fall into the trap of thinking these results are the final word on your future… they’re not.

Some people will get the grades they hoped for. Some won’t. Both groups will go on to build successful, fulfilling lives just often via different routes.

There are some pretty famous people that failed at school but went on to be highly successful, Richard Branson, Alan Sugar, Jaimie Oliver even Albert Einstein!!

What actually matters long-term?

* Resilience when things don’t go to plan
* Work ethic and consistency
* Curiosity and willingness to learn
* How you treat people along the way

And for those sitting accountancy exams, there’s no hiding from it, they’re tough! (And here's a little secret... very few people pass them all first time.)

Good luck to everyone taking exams… you’ve got this!!

There are just a couple of days left until the Renters Rights Act takes effect on the 1st May. This is a complete overhaul of the private renting sphere by abolishing Section 21 "no-fault" evictions, ending fixed-term contracts in favour of rolling, monthly periodic tenancies, and banning rental bidding wars.

Here we are, Friday afternoon again. Its been a really busy week which has made the week fly by.

But as we enter the weekend the sun is shining. Isn't it amazing that sunshine and blue skies can make everything seem a little easier? At the end of the day its the same world, same challenges just a bit brighter.

Amazing what a change in light/perspective can do!

Have a great weekend and enjoy the sun while it lasts!

If you are thinking about selling your business, whether that is in six months or six years, one of the first questions you will probably ask yourself is “what’s it worth?”

While there are formulas designed to calculate the value of a business, in the end the answer to that question comes from a judgment call made by a prospective buyer who will be weighing up the risk and return of buying your business.

Many business owners focus on the headline profit figure. Of course, profit does matter, but it is only one part of the picture. Buyers focus on how sustainable those profits are, how dependent the business is on you personally, and how easy it will be for them to step in and run it.

In our recent blog we set out some of the main factors that typically affect the value of a business and some practical suggestions on steps you can take to improve your position before you go to market.

If you're thinking about selling your business one of the biggest advantages you can give yourself is time. Get in contact for a no obligation chat, it never hurts to talk about your business and its future!

Another week wrapped up and it’s been a busy one… Plenty of client work keeping us on our toes, great conversations with new prospects, a lot of coffee consumed (standard)!

Now it’s time to swap spreadsheets for scorecards ⛳ Neil’s out this afternoon enjoying a well-earned round of golf with some great clients and contacts because sometimes the best business conversations don’t happen in the office.

If you play golf and would like to join Neil for lunch and a round one Friday afternoon drop an email to Jenny at [email protected] and she'll get you sorted with a date.

Have a great weekend all!
