📢 The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has described the UK government's formal commitment to introducing legislation to tackle late payments as an historic moment.

According to the FSB, small businesses have spent years dealing with a culture of poor payment practices, with larger organisations often delaying payments to their smaller suppliers.

The King's Speech has now confirmed that the government's plans for stricter prompt payment rules will go ahead during this Parliament.

The proposed measures include:
✔️ Maximum payment terms of 60 days
✔️ Mandatory interest on late payments at 8% above the Bank of England base rate

These changes could have a significant impact on payment practices across the UK and provide greater protection for small businesses facing cash flow challenges caused by late payments.

🚨 Important update for employers 🚨

There is now less than a year to go before it becomes mandatory for employers to payroll most Benefits-in-Kind (BiKs).

From 6 April 2027, businesses will need to report and pay Income Tax and National Insurance on benefits such as company cars, private medical insurance and gym memberships through payroll in real time, replacing the current P11D year-end reporting process.

With over 3.5 million employees receiving taxable benefits, this is a significant change that could impact payroll systems, processes and compliance requirements for many businesses.

Preparing early can help avoid errors, penalties and unnecessary stress when the new rules come into force.
