Subject line: Countdown to MTD – 54 days

It is now only 54 days until Making Tax digital (MTD) commences!

As detailed out in previous emails Making Tax Digital (MTD) is the new process HMRC are rolling out as of April 2026 which requires all sole traders and landlords with a turnover of £50k or over to record and file quarterly returns through MTD compliant software.

MTD steps to know you are on the right path are set out below:

Step 1: You should all now have your business bank account setup

Step 2: You should now have picked an MTD compliant software (freeagent, Xero, sage etc)

Step 3: Next step is to register your business with HMRC for MTD
Please bear in mind that HMRC are imposing MTD on the taxpayer which requires additional work and submissions. You can do this yourself or if necessary, we can provide this service at an additional cost. This in no way detracts from the work undertaken by ourselves in preparing accounts and tax returns so the usual year end fees still stand. We are simply receiving your records in a digital format as opposed to paper format.

Please contact us as soon as possible if you would like a quote for us to process the MTD records for you.

If you like and follow us on Facebook, we will be posting any updates here.

DIRECTOR ID VERIFICATION AT.COMPANIES HOUSE - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW?

From 18 November 2025, Companies House will introduce mandatory identity verification for all company directors, People with Significant Control (PSCs), and certain filing agents. This is part of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, designed to improve the accuracy and security of the UK companies register.

WHO MUST VERIFY?

New directors and PSCs appointed after 18 November 2025 must verify their identity before their appointment can be registered.

Existing directors and PSCs must complete verification by the time their company files its next confirmation statement after that date.

The process also applies to company secretaries and anyone filing documents on behalf of a company.

HOW VERIFICATION WORKS?

Verification confirms that the person is who they claim to be. There are two approved routes:

1. Direct verification – done through Companies House using GOV.UK One Login, typically by scanning your passport or driving licence and completing a facial recognition check.

2. Via an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) – such as an accountant, solicitor, or formation agent who is registered with Companies House to carry out identity checks.

Once verified, each individual will receive a unique personal code linking their verified identity to all directorships or PSC roles they hold. This personal code must be included in future filings.

TIMING AND TRANSITION

Voluntary verification opened in April 2025, allowing directors to complete the process early.

Mandatory verification begins 18 November 2025 for new appointments.

Existing directors must verify within a 12-month transition period, meaning all companies should be fully compliant by autumn 2026.

Failure to verify within the required timeframe will mean a director cannot lawfully act in that capacity and Companies House may reject filings or impose sanctions.

WHAT DIRECTORS SHOULD DO NOW?

Complete your verification as soon as possible – don’t wait until the deadline.

Keep your personal code secure and share it only with trusted company officers responsible for filings.

If you’re a company officer, ensure all directors and PSCs have completed verification before your next confirmation statement is filed.

Update internal registers and processes to record when each person’s verification is complete.

KEY POINT

Identity verification is not just an administrative step – it is a legal requirement that underpins transparency and accountability in UK company ownership and management. Acting early will help ensure smooth filings and avoid compliance issues once the new rules take effect.
