Selling a business can shape the rest of your life.

For many owners, the business is more than just a source of income. It may also be:

• your pension
• your family security
• your biggest financial asset.

That is why planning early matters.

Three to five years gives you time to think clearly about retirement, future income, pensions, investments and what you want life to look like after the sale.

The sale price is only part of the picture.

We have put together a practical guide for UK business owners thinking about selling in the next few years.

Most people don’t pay too much tax in retirement because of complicated rules.

It’s usually down to how they take their income.

Once work stops, it’s no longer just one salary.

It becomes a mix of pensions, ISAs, savings and investments, all working together in ways that aren’t always obvious.

And that’s where things can quietly go wrong.

A common situation we see:

Someone takes a large pension withdrawal because it feels like the easiest option.

But that one decision can push them into a higher tax band and create a bigger bill than expected.

What tends to work better is a bit more joined up thinking.

Using different pots together.
Spreading withdrawals over time.
And being clear about what you take, when, and from where.

It doesn’t need to be complicated, but it does need a plan.

We’ve pulled this into a practical guide based on the questions people often ask as they approach retirement.

If you’re in your 50s or 60s, it’s well worth a read.

Most business owners we speak to have built up cash in their company.

But they’re not completely sure what to do with it.

And it’s not because they haven’t thought about it.

It’s because there are a few moving parts:

- What needs to stay accessible
- What could be used more efficiently
- And what’s genuinely long-term.

So it often just sits there.

We’ve found having a simple framework makes things much clearer.

Is retirement actually good for your health? 🍏

The truth is: 𝗶𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝘁.

For many, retirement brings more time, less stress and a better quality of life.

But for others, it can also mean less structure, fewer connections, and more uncertainty.

In our latest article, we explore what the research shows about health and wellbeing in retirement, and how staying active, socially connected and financially confident can make all the difference.

Whether you’re in your 50s or 60s and starting to plan, or you’ve already stepped into retirement, this is well worth a read.

The Retirement Checklist 🎥

Retirement is a long phase of life that can last 30 years or more, and it’s often the smaller, less obvious things that catch people out.

In this short video, our Managing Director and Chartered Financial Planner, Daniel Boden, shares a few of the things people often miss as they approach retirement.

If you’re in your 50s or 60s, it’s well worth a watch 🍿

And if retirement is on your mind, what’s the one thing you’re most unsure about?

⏰𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝘅 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝟱 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲⏰

If you’re a business owner or higher earner, now is a good time to pause and sense check a few things before allowances reset.

A few areas worth reviewing:

• Are you close to the £100,000 Personal Allowance taper?
• Have you made full use of your pension annual allowance?
• Is any of your £20,000 ISA allowance still unused?
• Do your investments outside ISAs need a Capital Gains Tax tidy up?
• Have you used your £3,000 annual gifting exemption?

Year end planning does not have to mean big, dramatic moves. Often it is simply about timing and making sure nothing obvious is missed.

We’ve pulled together a clear checklist here:

More families are being drawn into it as property values and savings rise, often without realising until they’re dealing with an estate.

The good news is there are a few sensible steps that can make a real difference, especially if you plan early:

• The gifting rules and the 7 year rule
• Allowances that are easy to miss
• When trusts can help, and when they can add complexity
• A key change from April 2026 for farmers and business owners

We’ve pulled it together in a guide for families in Cirencester and across the Cotswolds, with clear watch outs and practical next steps.

⚠️ Inheritance Tax relief is changing from 6 April 2026 ⚠️

Business Relief is becoming more targeted and, in some cases, less generous.

Many people assume it only applies to business owners or farmers.

It doesn’t.🧑‍🌾

There are retail investment options that can qualify for Business Relief.

But here’s what is often overlooked:

• They are higher risk than mainstream investments
• Relief is not guaranteed
• The two year qualifying period may run longer than expected
• Qualification is assessed at the date of death

This is not a quick fix. It is a specialist planning tool.

For some families, Business Relief investments can strengthen an estate plan. For others, they may introduce more risk than benefit.

The right starting point is always the wider plan first.
Cash flow. Retirement income. Risk tolerance. Then tax.

If you would like to understand how this works and what is changing in 2026, you can read the full article here:
