As accountants, we spend most of our time talking about:

📊 deadlines
📋 compliance
💷 payroll
📈 reporting

So today feels like a good excuse to talk about something equally important — workplace wellbeing.

A positive working environment matters. Whether it is flexible working, supportive teams or occasionally having a four-legged colleague in the office, happier teams are often more productive teams.

Although we are fairly sure dogs are mainly interested in improving biscuit distribution policies 🦴😄

Hands up if you knew there was a tax-free HMRC allowance for car sharing on business journeys? 🙋‍♀️

Most people know about mileage claims… fewer know this bit:

🚗 If an employee carries another employee on a work trip in their own vehicle, employers can pay an EXTRA 5p per mile per passenger tax-free.

Plus, from April 2026, the standard HMRC mileage rate for cars and vans increased from 45p to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles — the first increase in 15 years.

With fuel, insurance and running costs where they are, many will say it’s overdue.

A small change on paper…but for employees regularly travelling for work, it soon adds up.

⚠️ Important Update For Limited Companies ⚠️

Companies House has announced changes to how accounts will need to be filed from April 2028.

The new rules will require small companies and micro-entities to file profit & loss accounts digitally using approved software as part of wider reforms aimed at improving transparency and tackling fraud. Businesses will also no longer be able to file abridged accounts.

If you run a limited company, these changes could affect how you prepare and submit your accounts in the future.

🚗 BIG NEWS FOR BUSINESS MILEAGE CLAIMS 🚗

The Chancellor has announced the first increase to HMRC mileage rates in 15 years 👏

From April 2026, the HMRC Approved Mileage Allowance Payments (AMAPs) for cars and vans increase from 45p to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles.

New approved rates:
✔ Cars & Vans
• 55p per mile (first 10,000 miles)
• 25p thereafter
✔ Motorcycles – 24p per mile
✔ Bicycles – 20p per mile

And here’s a point many employees miss 👇

👥 Car sharing for business journeys

If you take a fellow employee with you on a work journey, your employer can also pay an additional 5p per mile per passenger tax-free.

A useful saving for businesses and staff alike. If your employer pays less than the approved HMRC rate, employees may also be able to claim Mileage Allowance Relief through HMRC. Worth reviewing your mileage policies and payroll settings now to ensure they are updated correctly from April.
