For the first time in 15 years, HMRC has officially updated the Approved Mileage Allowance Payments (AMAP) for cars and vans—backdating the change to 6 April 2026.

If your team uses their personal vehicles for business travel, this 10p increase directly impacts your payroll boundaries and expense tracking.

Here is the "55p rule" broken down for UK business owners, directors, and HR managers:

📈 The New Approved Thresholds
55p per mile (up from 45p) for the first 10,000 business miles in a tax year.
25p per mile for any business miles driven above that 10,000 threshold.
Note: This is the maximum limit your business can reimburse employees tax-free. It is not a mandatory legal requirement to pay this exact amount.

📉 Scenario A: You pay LESS than 55p
You are legally permitted to keep your company mileage rate lower (e.g., 30p or 40p) to manage overheads.

Your business is not required to top up the difference.
Your employees can personally claim Mileage Allowance Relief directly from HMRC to reduce their personal tax bill. It doesn't cost your business a penny.
📈 Scenario B: You pay MORE than 55p
If you want to offer a higher reimbursement as an incentive, be careful with the tax implications:

Any amount paid above the 55p limit is considered a taxable benefit.
The employee must declare the difference above 55p to HMRC via a self-assessment.

Even if an employee’s hourly rate is above the National Minimum Wage, certain deductions and costs can reduce pay for minimum wage purposes.
Common examples include:

• Uniform costs
• Tools or equipment
• Till shortages
• Mandatory training costs
• Salary sacrifice arrangements

These issues are often accidental — but HMRC can still require employers to repay staff and face penalties.
Regular payroll checks can help businesses stay compliant and avoid unexpected problems.

If you’d like support reviewing your payroll processes or checking compliance, our team is here to help.

The biggest tax shake up in decades is coming into place for sole traders & landlords.

Have you heard about Making Tax Digital (MTD) yet?

We’ve spoken to several business owners recently who hadn’t heard about it yet.

Making Tax Digital is a new system from HMRC that will change how some businesses report their income and expenses.

Instead of completing one tax return each year, many sole traders and landlords will need to:

✔ Keep digital records
✔ Use compatible accounting software
✔ Send updates to HMRC every 3 months

📅 From April 2026 this will apply to those earning over £50,000

📅 From April 2027 it will apply to those earning over £30,000

Share this with your friends so they don't get caught out either ↪️
