🛑 DON'T IGNORE SIMPLE ASSESSMENT LETTERS, SAYS HMRC

HMRC has urged customers not to ignore Simple Assessment letters for the 2025/26 tax year.

HMRC issues around 1.8 million Simple Assessment letters and stated that people should check the figures in their letter against their own records.

The letters will be sent to those who have tax to pay on income that has not been taxed through Pay As You Earn (PAYE) or Self Assessment.

Individuals may receive a Simple Assessment letter if they owe tax that cannot be collected automatically by HMRC, for example, if:

✅ There's tax to pay on interest on savings or dividends
✅ A second income has not been taxed
✅ Tax is due on pension income
✅ They received more tax-free allowance than they were entitled to
the tax cannot be collected through a tax code (for example, larger amounts owed, typically £3,000 or more).

Any tax owed should be paid by 31 January 2027, unless a different date is shown.

Myrtle Lloyd, Chief Customer Officer at HMRC, said: 'If you receive a Simple Assessment letter and have tax to pay, please don't ignore it. It's quick and easy to pay any tax owed via the HMRC app.

'If you need extra support or want to find out more, search 'Simple Assessment' on GOV.UK.'

Accountants quite often talk about cash, profits, accounting profits, and taxable profits all in the same sentence, but you may be asking yourself: “Isn’t that all just the same thing? And, if I have cash in my bank account, doesn’t that mean that I’ve made a profit and I can just spend it?”

Your accountant might be saying one thing about your money, while your bank manager is saying something quite different!

So, how do you know exactly how much money you’ve made at the end of every tax year?

It’s all in the timing, and in our latest blog we dive into the why. Have a read here: https://franchiseaccountingspecialists.co.uk/post/help-my-accountant-bank-manager-arent-speaking-the-same-language

⏰ MTD FOR INCOME TAX: 7 AUGUST DEADLINE IS NEAR ⏰

Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax is now live. Most self-employed individuals and landlords who had turnover above £50,000 in 2024/25 were mandated into the regime from 6 April 2026.

Under MTD, you must keep digital records and submit updates to HMRC every quarter using compatible software. This is a significant change from the old system, where most reporting took place after the end of the tax year.

The first quarterly update for 2026/27 is due by 7 August 2026.

This deadline is approaching quickly, and it is important that records are complete and up to date well before then.

If we maintain your bookkeeping or prepare your submissions, you will need to send us your records in good time. Leaving this until the last minute creates unnecessary risk and may lead to delays or errors.

🔗 If you're unsure what information we need, or whether MTD applies to you, please get in touch as soon as possible: https://franchiseaccountingspecialists.co.uk/contact

Almost every franchisor we talk with complains of a 'middle' volume of franchisees who could do more but aren't.

~20% high fliers - top performing franchisees who are a dream to work with

~10% non-compliant - poor performers who complain about almost everything

One of the best ways we can support your success is by supporting your franchisees. And we help you generate that success from the very start by allowing you to include training and financial support as part of your initial training or ongoing support.

We do this through:

✅ One-to-One Business Planning Days – Aimed at the new Franchisee, working together to produce a 3 year plan which gives them a clear understanding of their business finances and how to measure their success.

✅ New Franchisee Training – A comprehensive training day covering all the fundamentals of business finance, from understanding the different types of tax, the best company structures, payroll and employee rewards and how to understand those all important financial reports.

🤝 OVER HALF OF UK BUSINESS LEADERS WANT GOVERNMENT TO PRIORITISE EU RELATIONSHIP 🤝

A majority of UK business leaders now calling on the government to prioritise its relationship with the European Union, according to research from the Institute of Directors (IoD).

Ahead of the introduction of the proposed European Partnership Bill and the upcoming UK-EU Summit, currently scheduled for 22 July, the IoD's latest data shows that 52% of business leaders believe the government should make the EU its top trading priority.

This represents a significant increase from 35% in April 2025, underlining growing recognition of the EU's importance to UK business.

In contrast, the proportion of respondents who believe the government should approach all trading partners equally has fallen to 35%, down from 41%.

Support for prioritising the US has dropped sharply, with just 2% of business leaders identifying it as the top priority, compared to 10% last year.

Emma Rowland, Trade Policy Adviser at the IoD, said: 'Ten years on from the Brexit vote, the gravitational pull towards the EU has strengthened markedly. This data reflects the EU's enduring role as the UK's closest and largest trading market, and the one with which firms have the most integrated supply chains.

'In an increasingly uncertain global environment – characterised by geopolitical tensions, heightened protectionism and increased tariff barriers – business leaders are prioritising stability. The shift away from transatlantic trade is symptomatic of this strive for predictability, something that the US is not offering at the moment.'

As a franchise business owner, you have a legal requirement to ensure ‘accounting’ for your business happens. It's through accounting and reporting that the government agency, HMRC, then collects taxes.

HMRC allow some things as ‘business expenses’, but sadly this is an ever-shrinking allowance.

Unless you're helped and advised correctly, you could find yourself in very unpleasant circumstances where a large and unexpected ‘debt’ is demanded by HMRC.

Our experience of working with franchise businesses shows us that, incredibly, this happens far too often, and many thousands of franchisees are ill-advised and find themselves with large and unexpected HMRC tax bills!

Our mission is to help you avoid that scenario.

In our eBook 'Why Every Accountant is NOT the Same – and Why That Matters for Your Business', we look at your current options in the marketplace, and shine some light on how the right kind of specialist accountant can be a huge asset to your franchise business.
