UK ECONOMIC SECURITY AT RISK, SAYS BUSINESS GROUP

The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has warned the government that the UK's economic security is at risk, and has urged it to prioritise security after ten years of geopolitical shocks.

The BCC said such shocks have 'repeatedly damaged' growth and have left businesses in the UK 'permanently bruised'. It listed the Covid-19 pandemic, Brexit and the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East as disrupting factors.

A new report by the BCC has outlined 'urgent steps' needed to secure vital manufacturing inputs and stop British competitiveness declining in an 'increasingly unstable' world.

Shevaun Haviland, Director General of the BCC, commented: 'Over the past decade, British businesses have weathered some of the toughest economic shocks we've faced in the past 100 years. Through sheer resilience and ingenuity, they have kept trading in an increasingly unpredictable global environment.

'But it's clear that this is not enough. The UK's inadequate economic security has become a drag on growth, competitiveness and national strength; yet it is still not given the focus and urgency it demands.'

A while ago, franchise business owners were surveyed and asked what they most wanted from their accountant. The most commonly used word was ‘proactive.’

Not long after this, every accountant’s website started using the word, knowing it was what their target audience wanted to see.

But that’s just the copy on the website.

So, what should you expect from your accountant, over and above the basics, for them to deserve to describe themselves as proactive?

MAKING TAX DIGITAL FOR INCOME TAX IS LIVE!

The commencement of Making Tax Digital (MTD) for income tax is now live!

This is the new 2026/27 tax year regime for self-employed individuals and landlords if they have business and/or property income (i.e. total takings, not net profits) of more than £50,000 per annum.

MTD requires digital record-keeping and quarterly updates to HMRC, with the first such update due by 7 August 2026.

The final MTD Regulations were laid before Parliament on 24 March 2026.

If you're one of the 860,000 individuals moving into the new regime, HMRC are also keen to stress that a normal annual tax return will still be required for the 2025/26 tax year.

This means that in addition to providing HMRC with quarterly updates during the year to 5 April 2027, your annual 2025/26 tax return will still need to be filed by 31 January 2027.

We've been assisting our clients with the move to MTD. Please do reach out if we're not already planning your transition into this new digital regime.

GAINS IN BUSINESS CONFIDENCE 'AT RISK'

Data published by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has revealed that confidence amongst small firms rose slightly in the first three months of 2026, but could fall without government intervention.

The FSB's Small Business Index recorded a confidence reading of -53 in the first quarter of this year, up 18 points from the historic low of -71 registered in the last quarter of 2025.

The business group stated that confidence is 'crawling back', but fresh cost pressures could 'drag it straight back down'.

'Sentiment among the community remains low, driven by mounting costs stemming from policy decisions made by ministers,' said Tina McKenzie, Policy Chair at the FSB.

'The outlook for small business growth is bleak, and you can't get growth in the economy relying just on the UK's large corporate firms who are feeling relieved after the last Budget.

'Small businesses need a cushion to absorb the costs kicking in over the course of the year, because without changes to business rates, help with energy costs, an SSP rebate and a delay in dividend tax increases, it leaves them in a very vulnerable place.'

As a franchise business owner, you have a legal requirement to ensure ‘accounting’ for your business happens. It's through accounting and reporting that the government agency, HMRC, then collects taxes.

HMRC allow some things as ‘business expenses’, but sadly this is an ever-shrinking allowance. Unless you're helped and advised correctly, you could find yourself in very unpleasant circumstances where a large and unexpected ‘debt’ is demanded by HMRC.

Our experience of working with franchise businesses shows us that, incredibly, this happens far too often, and many thousands of franchisees are ill-advised and find themselves with large and unexpected HMRC tax bills! Our mission is to help you avoid that scenario.

In our eBook 'Why Every Accountant is NOT the Same – and Why That Matters for Your Business', we look at your current options in the marketplace, and shine some light on how the right kind of specialist accountant can be a huge asset to your franchise business.
