A summer of two halves!

One minute your skipping round IKEA buying children’s toy storage solutions and eating meatballs, looking forward to an after wedding in the evening!

The next you are in A and E at 9:30am on a Sunday morning having busted a few too many moves on the dance floor at the after wedding and broken your foot.

I’ve never broken a bone before so this was a very new experience. Having to use crutches and not being able to drive, even newer!

So whilst it was a huge pain, in both senses of the word, there were a few things that I was grateful for.

1, It happened in August, when things are generally quieter.

2, My husband was at home and able to help.

3, The kids are older and were able to help their Mummy.

Had this have happened at another point of the year, I think the wheels would have fallen off the operation slightly.

It has been a wake up call though. I never set out on that Saturday morning to break my foot. It’s made me think about contingency plans a little closer and what would happen if scenarios!

All I can say is thank goodness for Zoom, to allow business to continue as usual, Amazon for the summer birthday’s present cover and Sainsbury’s for keeping the wine deliveries coming!

I’m back driving this week, so good luck Herefordshire (only joking) and I’m looking forward to getting back out and seeing all my lovely clients face to face.

September brings back to school and back to rugby🏉.

Two out of three of my children now play in the mini and juniors section rugby club. My youngest has decided to follow her older brother this season and join in.

We are proud as a company to support the amazing work this club does for the local community.

On days like today there is no better place to be.

Let’s see how keen I am though in the darker colder months!

Is it better to save or invest your hard earned money?

It all depends on what you want to achieve.

Both are putting money aside for the future, but depending on when you want to access the money again can decide which is the better option for you.

Cash savings are ideal for a rainy-day fund or to pay for a short-term goal.

Investments are for the long term and may require more risk.

Working with a financial advisor can help you to figure out which of the two options (or a mix of both) is the best for you, so get in touch if this is something you need help with.

“Talk to yourself like someone you love.” - Brene Brown

If you wouldn’t talk to your child or best friend like that, then you shouldn’t talk to yourself like that either.

Celebrate yourself and all your own achievements, you deserve it!

As a small or medium-sized-business owner, engaging with your community can make a huge difference to the people and environments you help. But it can also be extremely rewarding for you, your staff and your business.

Ideas of ways to help in the community include:

🖤 Offering financial support for local causes - for example, a fundraising event run by employees

🖤 Allowing staff one or more days for volunteering each year

🖤 Reacting to local calls for help - for example, for extra food donations or support for a local cultural venue

🖤 Supporting schools - for example, offering talks and work-experience opportunities

🖤 Partnering with local charities and community groups for one-off events or ongoing support.

I love going into schools to deliver financial education, as well as supporting other causes as and when I can. How do you like to give back to your local community?

Tax matters touch nearly every aspect of your finances, so optimising tax reliefs and allowances as part of a holistic financial plan is key.

Don’t just think about tax at the end of the tax year - it’s something you need to think about all year round.

The easiest way to do this is through talking to a Financial Advisor, who can take a look at all the allowances and changes that the government bring in and advice you accordingly.

If you need any help with this, get in touch by sending a DM.

Many of us will have had a money-related goal among our New Year’s Resolutions. It’s a perfect time of year to break old money habits and make some new ones. But have you stuck to the resolution?

Well, even if you haven’t, here are some other options you can change your resolutions to which are excellent habits to get into:

Make the most of your allowances - including carrying forward any unused tax relief allowance on pension payments from previous years.

Don’t leave sorting your taxes and year-end finances to the 4th April, you never know what will crop up!

Get into the habit of keeping your paperwork up to date, you’ll make life much easier come self-assessment time. Plus, you’ll give your accountant less chasing to do, which means less time to charge you for 💁‍♀️

Use the HMRC app to organise your paperwork - it’s better than you might expect!

If you’re not already taking financial advice, this is perhaps the best habit to get into. Financial advice helps you stay on track for your long-term goals, and gives reassurance as well as practical, clear advice in more challenging economic times like the present. Financial advice is the step that will drive other good financial habits.

It’s always a good idea to take advantage of your annual tax reliefs and allowances wherever you can. Not only does it mean that you don’t pay more tax than necessary, it also helps to improve your investment outcomes and makes it easier to achieve your financial goals.

There are reductions coming to the Capital Gains Tax allowance, so investors with assets to sell should check in with us and start planning ahead.

The Dividend Allowance charges are being reduced as well, so if this affects you it’s also a good time to get in touch.

As ever, good financial advice can be invaluable so if you’re in need of this then get in touch.

Do you know how much a comfortable retirement will cost you?

According to the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association, a single person will need £10,900 a year to achieve the minimum living standard, £20,800 a year for moderate, and £33,600 a year for comfortable. For couples it is £16,700, 30,600 and £49,700.

Assuming you qualify for the full State Pension of £9,627.80 2022/23 a year, the PLSA says you’ll still need to build up a pension pot worth at least £590,000 to achieve a comfortable retirement.

Does this shock you?
