⚠️ A quick warning for dentists who've ever used Moor Green & Co, the Birmingham accountants who specialised in dentists.

A dentist came to us stressed about a tax position they didn't fully understand — multiple companies, a large HMRC bill, and money being moved around in a way that just didn't add up.

They'd been told it was fine. They trusted their accountant. But nobody had ever really explained it to them.

Moor Green were well known in dental circles — which means a number of dentists may have followed similar advice without ever fully understanding it.

If you've ever thought "I don't really understand my tax setup, but my accountant said it was OK" — that's worth a second look.

We've written a short article explaining what we saw, and what to watch out for 👇

Did you know the jury service allowance from HMCTS is taxable if you're a self-employed dentist or company director? 👨‍⚖️

We recently helped one of our dentist clients claim his loss of earnings after being called for jury duty. His company had reduced his dividends while he was at court — so we wrote him a letter confirming his usual drawings and the reduction. That letter was exactly what HMCTS needed.

It's the kind of thing that's easy to miss if you don't know the rules.

We've written a full guide for dentists on what you can claim, what documents you need, and how it all works for tax. Well worth a read before your summons lands on the doormat!

Dentists with a limited company — this one is often misunderstood.

HMRC allows your company to pay for up to £500 per year of pension advice tax‑free — but only if certain conditions are met.

While researching this, we discovered there’s no age requirement, which actually makes this particularly useful for associate dentists. For practice owners with employees, the rules are more restrictive and need careful review.

We’ve set this out clearly in a new, practical guide aimed specifically at dentists.

If you’re unsure whether this applies to your situation, it’s worth getting proper advice before assuming it does.

🚗 Petrol or diesel… or is it time to go electric?

We’re seeing more dentists ask whether switching to an electric company car actually makes sense from a tax point of view.
One recent question was:

“What tax do I personally pay on an electric company car — and how do you work it out?”

The short answer:

You’re taxed on the Benefit‑in‑Kind (BIK)
Electric car BIK is still very low
The company pays for the car from pre‑tax income

Once you see the numbers written down, the difference compared to petrol or diesel is often pretty stark.

We’ve put together a clear, dentist‑specific guide with worked examples here 👇

If you’re thinking about changing cars, it’s well worth running the numbers before signing anything.

Quick heads‑up for dentists…

A lot of people are assuming MTD penalties have been cancelled for 2026/27.

They haven’t — they’re only deferred.

So yes, it’s a “softer” year… but ignoring MTD now can still cause problems later.

Here’s a short, plain‑English guide explaining what’s really happening (and what to do next):

🚗⚡ Electric car grants for dentists – what you need to know for 2026–27

Thinking about an electric car?

Grant eligibility, VAT, and charging rules aren’t the same for every dentist — and getting it wrong can mean missing out or paying more than you need to.

In our latest guide, we explain:

✅ Which dentists can claim the Workplace Charging Scheme (£500 per socket)
✅ Why Ltd companies and LLPs often qualify more easily than sole traders
✅ Whether associate dentists can use workplace chargers
✅ A permanent VAT saving many practice owners overlook
✅ How home EV charging can be reimbursed by a limited company using smart tariffs

This is practical, dentist‑specific guidance — not generic EV advice.

Selling a dental practice and suddenly facing last‑minute VAT or “option to tax” questions?

I’ve written a short guide explaining tax liability insurance, how it can protect sellers from unexpected HMRC challenges, and why buyers will often cover the cost if they’re the ones raising the risk.

If you’re selling (or thinking about it), this could save a lot of stress late in the process
