The football world cup commences on June 11th, giving employers more to think about. Will you be a world class manager this summer as you guide your team through the HR considerations of a football world cup?

With most games kicking off after 8pm (due to the time differences, and counting early hours games as part of the night before), the biggest challenge may come for businesses running night shifts with footy-mad employees. 11pm, 2am and 3am games will be routine.

Even if your business runs during daylight hours this will still present problems. Droopy eyes and hangovers are no less desirable after a football match than your office Christmas party.

That said, a football world cup is something that captures the imagination of the whole country. So there is much to be said for striking the balance between embracing it and upholding standards. Here are some tips for doing just that: https://www.hrdept.co.uk/knowledge-hub/blog/will-you-be-a-championship-manager-during-the-2026-world-cup

“Open up, FWA!” could in theory be the dramatic words you hear as this new national agency bangs on your workplace doors, Hollywood style.

The Fair Work Agency (FWA) is the Labour government’s new “workers’ rights police force”, and on paper it is powerful. In fact, it has some actual police powers enshrined into its constitution.

It has been well-documented that the FWA is an amalgamation of several established watchdog-type agencies. It will help the state by both streamlining governance and joining the dots between wrongdoing.

This means that it has enforcement duties in a wide range of areas including the national minimum wage, holiday and sick pay and modern slavery among other things.

That is the “why” and the “what” of the FWA, but in this article we will now focus on the “how”.

In May's People Matter, we also discuss prioritising staff safety, rising fuel costs and more.

Many employers assume a conditional job offer can be withdrawn without consequence before employment begins, but a recent Employment Appeals Tribunal ruling shows it may not be that simple. If an offer has been accepted, withdrawing it for business reasons unrelated to the conditions could lead to breach of contract and notice pay.

In our latest blog, we explain what this means for employers and how to reduce risk in your recruitment process: https://www.hrdept.co.uk/knowledge-hub/blog/withdrawing-a-job-offer
