At Plus Accounting, we welcome the continued move towards digitalisation and Making Tax Digital. However, it is vital that any changes are introduced in a way that is practical, effective, and manageable for taxpayers, agents, and the wider profession.
A growing number of firms are raising concerns around the current proposed 5-week quarterly submission deadline for MTD ITSA and the operational pressure this could create, particularly alongside January Self Assessment deadlines, VAT submissions, and wider compliance requirements.
This Parliamentary Petition, launched by Nick Paddenburg (Paddenburg and Co - Brighton Tax), is calling for the MTD filing window to be extended from five weeks to three months. The proposal aims to improve reporting accuracy, reduce unnecessary administrative pressure, and help ensure the long-term success of Making Tax Digital for taxpayers, agents, and advisers alike.

HMRC should extend the Quarterly Update deadline under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax from 5 weeks to 3 months after each quarter, giving taxpayers and agents more time to prepare accurate submissions and better align with existing reporting cycles.
