Ey up πŸ‘‹

It's Yorkshire Day, and we thought we'd do things a little differently this year.

Whatever corner of Yorkshire you're from, chances are you've got your own dictionary of words that make no sense anywhere else β€” so we've put together a few of our favourites (and one or two that come up rather a lot in January πŸ“Š).

Swipe through, and let us know what we've missed β€” every county corner has its own version.

Whatever language you speak, we're always happy to help.

Happy Yorkshire Day, from all of us at WDS.

❄️ Winter Fuel Payment β€” are you going to be caught out?

The payment is back for 2025/26, but if your taxable income exceeds Β£35,000, HMRC will claw it straight back. And some pensioners could face a double hit β€” repaying two years at once.

Debra Fossett from our Bradford team breaks down what's changed, how the rules work for couples, and what you can do before it affects you.

πŸ“… 31 July Tax Deadline Reminder

⏰ Don't forget – your second Self Assessment payment on account is due by 31 July.

If you pay tax through Self Assessment and your last tax bill was more than Β£1,000, you'll usually need to make a second payment on account by 31 July 2026.

This payment is an advance towards your 2025/26 tax bill, so it's worth checking you've got the funds set aside.

πŸ’· Missing the deadline?

Late payments can result in interest being charged, so it's best to pay on time.

If you're unsure how much you need to pay or have any questions, our team is here to help.

The first MTD for Income Tax quarterly deadline is 14 days away.

If you're in scope β€” gross income over Β£50,000 from self-employment or property β€” your Q1 update covering 6 April to 5 July 2026 needs to be with HMRC by 7 August 2026.
If you're already set up and tracking digitally, you're in good shape. If you're not β€” there's still time, but not much of it.

Here's what needs to happen before 7 August:
β†’ MTD-approved software up and running (Sage, Xero, QuickBooks)
β†’ Bank feed connected and transactions categorised
β†’ Q1 income and expenses recorded and ready to submit

Remember: 2026/27 is a soft-landing year β€” no penalty points for late quarterly submissions this year only. From next year, the full points system applies.

πŸ’· Did you know? You can give unlimited Β£250 gifts, tax-free!

On top of your Β£3,000 annual exemption, you can give up to Β£250 to as many people as you like each tax year β€” with no Inheritance Tax to pay. Just make sure you haven't already used another exemption for that same person.

It's an easy way to start passing on wealth to family and friends, year after year.

Got questions about gifting and Inheritance Tax? Our team is here to help β€” drop us a message or give us a call.

Big news β€” we've placed 10th in this year's UK Top 50 SME Apprenticeship Employers rankings! πŸŽ‰

It's our third year running on the list, and our biggest jump yet β€” up from 31st last year. Not bad for a firm that's been running apprenticeships for over 50 years!

This kind of result doesn't happen by accident; it's down to the mentors, managers, and colleagues across our six Yorkshire offices who genuinely invest in developing our apprentices. Massive thank you to every one of you πŸ’™πŸ©΅πŸ’œ
