We're all guilty of putting things off - the pile of washing, the dishes, starting the new exercise programme. And for many, just the idea of just getting started is the hardest part.

Anyone can start doing a form of exercise for one minute, read one page of a book, or put one item of clothing away. And this is a powerful strategy because once you’ve started doing the right thing, it is much easier to continue doing it.

A habit should not feel like a challenge.

When it comes to your finances, doing something is better than doing nothing, whether you plan to manage them yourself or speak with a financial adviser for them to guide you through your life journey.

We find that the simple act of booking regular review meetings with my clients gets them thinking about their finances more often and forces the habit to come naturally. That way when we meet they already have their updated goals, aspirations and requirements at the ready.

What is of value to one person may not be to another, for example, some people simply value growth on money...

Whereas others value the fact they have their full financial affairs in order, meaning they worry less and have more time to do things they like to do.

To make a realistic financial plan that includes what you value most, you need real financial goals. This may be your net-worth figure being as high as it can possibly be, or it might simply be knowing you have enough to see you through your retirement years.

Have a think about what you'd value most when making a financial plan and let me know in the comments ⬇

Don't necessarily always just think about the money, think about what the money is going to be the catalyst for.

- Time with the family 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

- Retire early 🏖

- Gifting for your children's first home 🏡

- Making the world a better place to live ♻️

Your goals and aspirations are unique to you. Let them be your driver.

The temptation to wait until the end of the tax year (5th April 2023) to check you’re using your various allowances is one that should be resisted.

Taking time to review your tax allowances during the tax year can prevent last-minute panic and ensure that opportunities aren’t missed.

If you’ve ever left it as late as possible to meet a deadline, you’ll know what it feels like. You likely felt anxious and stressed, before experiencing the relief of (hopefully) getting your job done in time.

Waiting until the last minute can easily become a habit – but it can also come with a cost where financial deadlines are concerned.

Through our in-house analysts, we engage in frequent dialogue with fund managers on decisions they’ve made and how ESG factors were considered.

In 2020, we set a minimum requirement that all of our fund managers must be signatories of the United Nations-supported Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI).

The PRI is the industry standard for assessing a firm’s overall approach to responsible investment, and signatories are assessed and scored on their approach.

This allows us to push for change on a global scale.

As a qualified financial adviser, I offer regulated investments; these are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).

The purpose of the FSCS is if things go badly wrong, say an adviser runs off with someone's money or a provider goes into liquidation, then the investor will be compensated by the FSCS.

An unregulated investment may be things like Cryptoassetts (a current hot topic), burial plots, overseas boat mooring, airport car parking spaces, and the list goes on.

As these are not regulated by the FCA or covered by the FSCS, they don't have such a soft landing if they all go wrong.

It's therefore essential to do your homework when considering putting your money in an unregulated investment scheme.

Research highlighted by the FCA in 2019 indicated that 42% of pension savers could be at risk of falling victim to one or more of the common tactics used by pension scammers.

Don't become a stat, do your homework.

One of the most common things that financial advisers are asked by potential clients is: can you pick the next big stock or fund?

Or they may enquire how they should invest a specific lump sum to achieve the best returns.

However, a good financial adviser will always respond to such questions with the words:
“It depends.”

Although getting the investment ‘right’ is important, it is only a small part of the adviser’s role and the value that they bring.

There are five specific ways that advice can deliver financial benefits. Have a read ➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️
