MTD for Income Tax if you’re a sole trader or landlord without an accountant: YOU CAN DO IT
If in your 2024/25 tax return (the Jan 2026 deadline one) your INCOME was £50,000 or over, next month you will have to do a quarter return for April-June, the deadline is the 7th August 2026.
You do not need complex software or to pay lots for an accountant (and the Xero and Quickbooks adverts have me howling and also annoyed).
HMRC have a free webinar to explain more and I have seen one software provider giving low value sole-traders free spreadsheets that can submit the quarterly returns for you.

• planning for MTD for Income Tax – understanding the rules and work out if you’re affected and when
• how to prepare for MTD for Income Tax, including what you need to do
• the actions you will take and signing up for MTD for Income Tax
• using MTD for Income Tax – following the rules and consider how you can utilise any benefits and opportunities
You’ll also find useful short videos, including 'How do I sign up for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax' – available on HMRC’s YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJtCC2_OSXU&list=PL8EcnheDt1ziVCgfY3Z1-Q6wz2c6sec-x&index=5
