HMRC are giving an additional 30 days to file Self Assessment Tax Returns, as well as pay any tax due, before penalties and surcharges will be levied.

However, as was noted last year, the Tax Return would still be considered as being filed late, therefore extending the enquiry window by up to 3 months.

Late payment interest will also remain payable on any tax that is not paid by 31 January, with the surcharge being charged on any tax still remaining unpaid on 1 April.

Any individual who will have difficulty in paying their tax liabilities on time should still look to discuss a time to pay arrangement with HMRC at the earliest opportunity.

Late filing and late payment penalties are to be waived for one month for Self Assessment taxpayers.
